Default Pinned barrel and recessed cylinder .

What is the significance of a pinned barrel and a recessed cylinder ?. I have a half dozen guns with some or both of these features , but cannot realize the difference between these models and other models without . thanks for any input .

There is really no difference in the performance or function of the revolver. It just bespeaks of a time when quality was more important. More hand fitting and attention to detail. These features were time consuming, and probably added to the total cost of the revolver, so they were eliminated in 1982, with the exception rimfires are still recessed. I just think P&R revolvers are cool...which may be why I'm the P&R Fan.

Recessed rims or counterbored chambers are throwbacks to when cases had so-called balloon heads or formed & folded rims. Not solid brass as they are today.

Some people say they prefer non-recessed rims because they came see more easily if a cylinder has cartrigdes in it.

The other thing to remember is the recessed cylinders only came on Magnums and 22 caliber revolvers from S&W and all had pinned barrels until 1982. I think people associate these features with a time when S&W put a lot of hand labor into the building of their revolvers and a time before major cost cutting measures were being taken by the company.

Thumbs up

There are also "Transitional" models and are somewhat rare. I have a Model 28-2 6" barrel that has recessed cylinder and the barrel is Not pinned. Evidently during the switch from one model to the next, the parts inventory had to be used up(?).

S&W "always" used all remaining parts whenever possible. They never threw anything away. This does create some unusual variations during model changeovers. Modern inventory control and manufacturing has greatly reduced these variations and keeps stock on hand to a minimum.

Are the pinned barreled threaded on or are they press fitted?
