Default 2 smith & wesson revolvers

I have questions on two different s&w revolvers but unsure how to start a thread. Maybe you can help....the first is a 6 shot on the on the butt end of it (bottom of grip) number is 4d72961 when I open the cylinder up I see mcd 10-7 and on the swing arm part of the cylinder it looks like 51723840 and then on the barrel one side reads 38 s&w special ctg. and the other side says smith & wesson. i can post a picture if you think that would help. the other one I have questions on is 38 s&w shows model 925 then has i assume a serial number of ar61124 and it is a 5 shot single action. any help you can give me would be great. Thanks

I know a little so I will start a reply...

When you swing open the cylinder you will see where S&W put their Model number and revision on more modern S&W revolvers (post 1950's I think? Someone will be along to correct that.)

In your first example, you have a Model 10-7, a "K" frame in 38 special. That is what that "38 special ctg" means, the "ctg" stands for "cartridge." That "4D" number is probably the serial number. The "-7" means that is the 7th version, indicating that there were prior engineering changes. There were a jillion Model 10's made, they are somewhat common and a terrific, well-made revolver.

S&W publishes a catalog that lists serial number ranges and associated manufacturing dates. Many folks here have it and will likely chime in with some additional information for you.

Go back and look at this gun again. There is no .38 S&W Model 925 and S&W did not use a serial number like the one you mention.

Default model 925

If the 5 shot is a top brake it may be an H&R model 925.I have one in .38S&W.It will be marked H&R Inc.U.S.A. on the left frame under the cylinder,The s/n is on the right side.
