Question 8" barrel .22 revolver long rifle ctg.

My father recently gave me his .22 revolver long rifle ctg. with8" barrel. I'm trying to learn as much about this gun as possible. Can anyone give me ideas where to start?

The serial number (found under the grip) is 83K4171. the number under the cylinder is 33K4171. I have attached a few pics I hope will help.

This gun sat neglected for a long time and I have not even cleaned it yet. I remember shoting it many years ago and loved it. Can't wait to show it to my boys and let them shot it.

Again, just like to know all I can about my guns, but this is my only S&W. Any info and/or ideas where I can go to learn more would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

It looks like you have an 8 3/8” barrel model 17-4 from 1980. I’m assuming you read the serial number correctly off the butt and had difficulty seeing the 8 in the smaller serial number stamping below the barrel shank. The 1980 date comes from the most used reference, The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, (SCSW). The stock was made by Hogue.

I went to the range this evening so my 8 3/8” K 22 also needs a cleaning. I’m going to let the solvent soften the crud over night then clean it in the morning.

Federal Bulk pack 36 grain .22 LR shoots well in all of my k 22s. Before the hullabaloo over possible new gun laws and panic buying it was usually the least expensive .22 LR which makes it all the better.

K 22s are my favorite guns so I predict your boys will love it.

Thanks k22fan. I thought the gun was a bit older. Will be out on the range with my boys today.

You recieved a nice shooter grade Model 17-4 with 8 3/8 inch barrel and they are wonderful shooters. I have a 17-4 with 8 3/8 inch barrel that thinks it's a rifle because it's that accurate.
