S&W revolver.22 Remington Jet +.22WMR

Hi guys,
I have inherited a S&W model 53
It is in three cailbers .22 Remington Jet with Remington Jet cut sleeves to take .22 LR in the same cylinder and has a second cylinder chambered in .22 WMR.

The gun is in 99% NRA grade, with just the faintest sign of a drag line on the Jet/Mag cylinder.

The Barrel and cylinder are blued and have a faint purple cast to the blueing, where as the frame is a rich black blue, this contrasts in certain light.
It has a 6" pinned barrel and I believe it is an early 60's ish gun.

Is there anything anyone can tell me about it, including its estimated value, and if I shouldn't shoot it, it has been fired but no more that a handful of rounds by the looks of the cylinder.

Maybe someone will come along and correct me, but I've never heard of a .22 mag cylinder for a jet. Jet barrels are .222 while .22 mag barrels are .223, which is why .22 long rifle, .22 mag convertible guns generally don't shoot as well as a dedicated .22 lr revolver.
Are you sure this isn't a .22 long rifle cylinder?
These are fun guns, but they are finicky. Before you shoot .22 Jets you need to thoroughly degrease the chambers and the cartridges to prevent them from setting back on firing and locking the gun up.
The plum coloring is not especially uncommon, I believe it is due to the different compositions of the steel and the way it interacts with the blueing.
Value depends on several variables, 3 or 4 screw, whether you have the box and tools, but probably the value would be in the $700 to $1000 range depending on exactly what it is.
Oh, and I would shoot it! I've got a mint 8-3/8 4 screw that is a blast, literally. Just be sure that you wear good hearing protectors, these thing are loud!

With that WMR cylinder that is a rare piece. That would have been a special order as a LR cylinder was the "standard" extra cylinder. The purple is the result of a chemical reaction in the blueing. Not common in S&W's but not unknown. As you have described the basic gun, without the box and doc's I would guess $800-1000 in today's market. I don't know how much extra the WMR cylinder would add. Probably $200-250. Prices are a little crazy right now and I am being a little conservative.

I don't want to try and put a value on it, I think it might be more than has been suggested but maybe not. That's a rare and very desirable gun to a collector. Don't think I'd shoot it either. I think I would letter it to see if the extra cylinder was from the factory.

every 22 mag jet cylinders i have seen started out life as a 22lr and rechambered. without a jinks letter stating it to be real,it won't add to the value. in fact, some might even devalue it for ruining a good jet rimfire cylinder. if you letter it and it turns out to be real, then you have a higher value gun. price would be set by how many people want it and how bad. my opinion only and worth what you paid for it.

I believe that it would be worth a letter. It sounds like a great gun.
