Best Model 10, 64 versions
Hello all,
Could someone tell me which version of the HB 10's or 64's are the best?
"Best" being the period when they were of the highest quality.
I think pinned and recessed would be nice to have but would like some guidelines when looking.
Thanks

None of the 10s or 64s will be recessed. That was only only on magnums.

Up until the time of the MIM parts and the locks you really can't go wrong with any of them. Quality seems to be pretty much the same up until that time.

I have several different variations. You will find good and bad amongst the - models. I would base my decision on the particular example before me.
I prefer the variations before the lock and redesigned frame to accomodate the lockwork. I also prefer stainless models when the hammer and trigger were flash chromed. Mechanically though, theres little difference. I have a 65 and a 64 with the short lived floating hand design, I'm not crazy about it, but, the gun works fine.

I have a pinned-barrel 1966-built 10-5 with a four-inch standard (tapered) barrel. Fine balance, and I had a smith give it a nice trigger job. Sweet gun.

The very early stainless guns, I've found, had a problem with the screw retaining the ejector latch. This has come loose on 3 of my early stainless jobs, including a 64 pencil barrel. Nail polish did not help, a smith might know better. Later 64s (all HBs): not a problem.
