Extra part (pin) or missing part in my 28-2?
Cleaning up the new to me 28-2 (ca. 1967). I found this pin inside the spring within the rebound? Is this supposed to be there? There isn't one in my other 28-2 (ca. 1977).
I don't see it on schematics I have found.

Just compared springs and it looks like someone clipped off a couple turns on the spring too. Hmm.

It's a trigger stop rod.
It is supposed to be there.

I'll also warn you that the orientation MATTERS, get it in backwards and you'll find the trigger locking up depending on whether the gun is pointing up or down and leaning right or left. I would tell you what the specific orientation is but I got it wrong so often that now I radius the corners on both ends so it doesn't matter.

I just noticed the one end is blunt cut at an angle and the other is rounded.

I think the rounded end goes in the rebound slide first.
I can't be real sure at the moment though.

That would seem to be right, the inside of the rebound slide looks like it is bowl shaped.
Interestingly looking at the S&W parts list and other sources, it shows them in the model 27 and 29, but not the 28. Ordered

It is a trigger overtravel stop pin.
The flat end goes against the pin mounted in the frame, ie the rounded end goes in first.

Bingo, we have a winner.............. though we prefer to round off BOTH ends, to lesson ANY chance of a "snag"?? pinch??
yes this set up replaced the small cutout and piece ( trigger stop) that went into the guns of 'yore' that were outside, behind the trigger and could "loosen' ( rotate) and LOCK UP ,prevent a double action revolver from functioning, IE "police, duty" guns....hated when that happened.

Is that only on the N frames ? I do not recall any Ks having it.

Correct. Only found on N-Frame revolvers.
