Hi I have a S&W 36 Square Butt J frame that I would like to find out when it was made the serial number is J11001 I am sure it was made before 1980 Thanks in advance

well, looks like it came out of early 73' the production of serial numbers started with j100000 in 73', and ended with j250000 in 74'. should have the smaller barrel, s&w didn't produce the heavy barrel until 75'...... hope this helps.

My serial number is the J and only five numbers. If l remember right it was first bought in about 1969 or 1970

yes apologies, Mr. Diamondback68 is correct I was looking at the wrong info, as usual. 69'-70 numbers started with J1, ending in J99999.
