Have serial number but can't find model
We have a 6 shot revolver that states 22 Long Rifle CTG on the barrel. Serial number is K313xx. I am trying to figure out model number and date of manufacture. Can anyone help?
Thanks.

Did you open the cylinder and look for the model on the frame where the yoke otherwise hides it?

It's possible it was made before 1957. If thats the case it won't have a model number.
Can you post a picture or two? That would really help in determining what model you have.
And, Welcome

Probably have a pre model 17 if there is no model number
stamped inside the crane. Does it look like these?
The one on the bottom is in the serial # range.
K-22 Pre-17

Chuck -
Wow pictures! Ours looks just like the one on the bottom because it has the four lined stamp of writing above right of the trigger.
Thanks,
Ruth

And if it has a 4 inch barrel with a ramp front sight it is probably a 22 Combat Masterpiece or Pre-model 18. K313xxx looks to be 1957 manufacture with model stamping beginning about K317xxx.

From the limited information given you have a post WWII K-22 Masterpiece. Assuming the SN contains only 5 numerals after the K then it dates to 1948, which is considerably before model numbers were assigned in 1957. There is no model number, it is a "Named Model". If it has a 4" barrel then it would be a .22 "Combat Masterpiece". Various sources give an date of introduction for the Combat Masterpiece variously as 1948 or 1949. It is most likely a 6".

I'm sorry, I don't know what "Named Model" means.

It just means that it would have a name instead of a model number.
For example the K-22 Masterpiece (pre WWII was 2nd model)(post WWII was 3rd model). The post war than became the Model 17.
The K-22 Combat Masterpiece began in 1949 and then became the Model 18.
The famous 357 Magnum (post war) then became the Model 27
And so fourth.

Barrel length is measured from the muzzle (dangerous) end all the way to the face of the cylinder, not just to the frame. I am betting you have a 6 inch barrel mainly because a 5 inch would be unusual (very) in this model. You mention yours looks like the bottom one in the picture of the three revolvers. That one is a 6 inch barrel with what is called a Patridge front sight, named after a late 1800s and turn of the century target shooter named E. E. Patridge (not Partridge). Later, in another post, however, you mention a ramp from sight and that would be normal on the 4 inch, but not the 6 inch barrel.
As to names versus model numbers, S&W revolvers all have names, but in 1957 they were all assigned model numbers. If there is no model number stamped in the yoke, then you have a pre-model revolver.
For example, a 6 inch target 22 built on the K frame was called a K22 Masterpiece. In 1957, that same model became the Model 17 K22 Masterpiece. Collectors call the named models "Pre-Models," so if you have a K22 made before model numbers, it would be called by collectors a Pre-Model 17 K 22 Masterpiece.

Okay. So with a 6 inch barrel, to summarize the information provided, it is most likely a K-22 masterpiece pre-17 manufactured in 1948.
Thank you for your help!

You got it Ruth.
If it looks like the bottom one in my picture with the serial
number you provided, it is a pre-17 Also known as a K22
masterpiece. Very good shooting, smooth action, and most
of all FUN guns to shoot. Enjoy in good health.
Best Regards, Chuck
