19-4 My 1st Smith Revolver
I'm new to the forum and to S&W revolvers. Occasionally I stop at a small shop to 'look around' for something interesting. I was excited to find a Model 19-4 with a four inch barrel that was in good shape. Being my first Smith, I wanted a solid gun that represented one of the classics.

Nice first S&W. I put a LOT of .38 Special reloads through my 19s. I don't shoot as many .357s because of the recoil.
Now you NEED a 6", can't you just feel it calling to you?

Nice, I am also new to both. Also in the hunt for my first. I have already decided I need 2, and this gun is one of them. Good for you guy.

Nice gun and a good way to start.
You will, of course, have to acquire a Model 10, and a 36, and...you get the picture.
Welcome to the ranks of the doomed.

Thanks. I found it at a shop I rarely visit. The shop owner marked at mid-sevens but he was willing to come off that price by a few hundred, threw in some ammo and a soft case to make the deal. The gun seems to be in good mechanical condition and the finish is acceptable.

You simply cannot find a better first S&W than a model 19 4" IMO. Enjoy!

A 19-4 is, in my opinion, a great vintage. Still pinned and recessed, but it has speedloader cut target grips and the gas ring on the cylinder.
Very nice.

I appreciate the welcoming comments. I do hope to add other fine S&W revolvers to my collection and this forum appears to be an excellent place to learn about these handguns.

Very nice gun to start with. Excellent shooter. Just stay clear of the 125gr 357 mags and she can shoot anything you throw at her. It's versatile as a 38 Spl shooter too. The model 19 takes care of having to buy a modle 15 and a .357 model.
Now for a 2.5" snub nose and a 6" for book ends.

Welcome from Iowa
Very nice first Smith. You will enjoy it. My first Smith was a 686. But it did not take long for a 19 to find it's way home with me.

I believe that the Model 19 is the finest Smith & Wesson revolver in terms of versatility, balance, power, and overall good looks! Good score!

Everything I ever wanted in a revolver and nothing more. Oh. Someone else said that before I. I have had one in my stable since 1974 of self preservation. Shoot it. Use it. Learn well its features and you will survive.

Again, thanks all for the replies and welcome to the forum. I've only got interested in firearms over the last few years. Most of my handguns are semi-autos, but lately I've began to appreciate revolvers. Seems I've been migrating to better quality guns from the eariler "T" word (I'm not sure if I can say it on the S&W forum) to Rugers and now to a vintage Smith.

My first Smith was a 19-4. It was my first centerfire handgun. My Dad actually did the paperwork for me because I was only 17 at the time and a senior in HS. Foolishly I threw the box away because I knew I would never sell it, not thinking about whoever gets it when I die.
I stumbled across the receipt when cleaning out some stuff a couple of years ago. Out the door price including sales tax and a box of 50 Remington hollow points was $238 I think!
