Pawnshop rescue!!!
I saw this gun in the store last week @ $225 and walked away. It stayed in my mind and it followed home @$200 today.
I wonder in what finish it started out life? Could those be blood stains??!!
It locks up tight w/ a sharp clean bore & chambers etc. It is a 15-3 from 1977.
It'll probably become the gun I keep in my den or maybe CCW ocassionally.

Sometimes the beat up ones are the most fun. Had a couple refinished at the Factory. Problem is, that then you don't want to shoot them.
This well used 13-1 I found a bit ago has quickly become one of my favorites. Action is stellar and shoots like a dream. Enjoy that one as is.

How smooth is the action? That would indicate how much it has been shot or dry-fired. Refinishing the gun would probably set the action factory to factory-gritty. I would take the rotten appearance for a great action.

That's probably what I'd do...but I'd do the work myself. Brownells' air-dry Aluma-Hyde II semi-gloss black might be the ticket for that one.

That's pretty ugly, but on the up-side, anything you do to it will be an improvement. Since you did not buy it for looks, but because it is one of the best revolvers ever made, you got a good deal.
Post more pictures as you get it cleaned up.

That is exactly why I couldn't leave it in the shop.....
It has a nice smooth factory action & a sharp bore. So, I'm going to leave it alone and shoot/carry it just like it is.
It now has a set of Hogue finger groove grips on it and is ready for a trip to the range.
Any ideas what might have caused those stains?

Good save. If cleans up much I would be reluctant to refinish.
Looking like that, no one would want to steal it.
