Default Random Model 28-2 question...

Question for the Highway Patrolman fans...

Did 28-2's ever come shipped from the factory wearing target stocks or triggers or hammers? I realize these were basically a no-frills Model 27, but just curious.

All I have seen in recent memory were standard stocks, triggers and hammers.

Thanks
IC

I believe the target stocks could be factory ordered, not sure about the hammer and trigger.

From memory, options are
  • Standard or Target Stocks
  • 4" or 6" barrel
  • Smooth or Serrated Trigger
Well, I had to go to "the book" to see what the trigger widths were and found this in the list Mr. Supica made of standard and optional features:
Quote:
... .400" semi-target hammer, .265" serrated trigger or .400" smooth trigger ...
So the standard hammer is considered to be "semi-target".

Roy Jinks, the factory historian, wrote in his book "THE HISTORY OF SMITH & WESSON" that other than a choice between 4 or 6 inch barrels, the Highway Patrolman "could be ordered with the factory oversize target tocks, which was the only accessory the factory offered for this model."

I believe that target hammers and triggers were frequently installed after the guns were shipped by the factory, sometimes by the factory service department when the gun buyer returned it to have them installed, or by gunsmiths and handy owners, as the parts were widely available for purchase.

A few folks have boxes that are marked for either target hammers or triggers or both, but I have never seen a factory letter showing the guns were manufactured and shipped with them.
