The star, if stamped at all, is usually next to the SN on the butt. I have owned several S&W revolvers that were so marked, but I also have a New Model No.3 Target that was reworked by the factory that has no stars anywhere, and a .32 RP that has stars only on the barrel, cylinder and yoke. That gun is a prewar gun that had the barrel and cylinder replaced with post war parts, and was re-nickled. Consistency has never been a big item at S&W.
