I'm buying a model 57 41 mag revolver and when I looked at the serial number at first it appeared to be N7XXX, when you take a better look it shows a 5 after the stamped # that seems to be engraved not stamped .
Anyone know what's up with that?
I have always seen the numbers stamped.
Smith and Wesson is on vacation until next week so calling them was not an option.
Thanks in advance,

Is the serial number you are referring to stamped in the yoke cut along with the model number, or on the bottom of the grip frame? The number on the grip frame is the official number.
The # I was refering to is the one on the yolk next to the model #.
Since you mentioned the frame # I called the gun shop and asked him to take the grips off in order to see the other #, he did and the # there was all stamped and it included the # that was engraved on the yolk.
Thanks for the info! Now I feel much better.
I still wonder why they stamped part of the # and engraved the other.
Thanks again,
Lou
