Cool Assistance needed with Model 10-5 information

I own a 38 S&W Special CTG with 4" barrel - serial number D144xxx. It has 4 screws (one under grip & one strain screw). Hand ejector with fixed sight. I would appreciate any information on this gun. I purchased it many years ago at a gun show and still has the police department stamp on the left side where the gun was used at some point.
Thank you

Welcome to the Forum.
Your M10 was made in 1969 or 1970 according to the Catalog.
It is actually a 3 screw. The strain screw doesn't count in that regard. The fourth screw would be in the front of the trigger guard. That was eliminated in 1962 with the M10-4.
Looks like a nice one.

The Model 10 to me is a great revolver and the one that had the largest production number of all the S&W revolvers. I have two a 6 inch that was my late fathers and a 4 inch I bought about two years ago. They are great shooters and can be purchased for really decent prices and the 38 special is a very good round.

My 4 inch

My Dad's 6 inch

The model 10's are great guns. Here's my 10-5 that was retired from the Suffolk County Police Dept.

Since your revolver has the heavy barrel, it is likely a Model 10-6 rather than a 10-5. Is it actually marked 10-6? Models 10-5 and 10-6 were made at the same time with the difference typically being the type of barrel.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Steve,
It's stamped 10-5. Thanks for the insight.

Nice looking model 10. Interesting about the heavy barrel being marked dash 5. I guess you never know about SW. And I am liking fyimo's dad's taste in the 6". Very nice!
