Default Puzzled in MI....17-3 in .22MRF ?

I was shown this 6" Blue 17-3 today with a .22MRF barrel marking.
I did not get the serial number, nor did I have a .22 mag shell to see if it would chamber, looked about right to me though.
Mis-marked 48? He offered it at $650 in about 95% condition.
I always thought I might add a M48 to go with my 17-3 and 18 but, this one has me puzzled. What should I check for if I look at it again?
Any help is much appreciated.
John

That's it... are the barrel and cylinder really for 22 Magnum and do they appear to be original to the gun? Is it really stamped Model 17-3? I'm guessing it could have been "upgraded" by changing parts, or it could have "escaped" from the factory on a Friday afternoon(?)

Are you sure on the marking?

I "think" it should be 22WMR which stands for:

.22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire

In any case my books only show Model 17 and 17-2 and only in .22 LR.........

Couple of possibilities. If it is a .22mag barrel and cyl it could be mismarked (see many posts about mismarked guns) or a mag cylinder and barrel could have been fitted to a LR frame (seems less likely, but who knows). You would have to letter it to see what the factory says.

I'm sure about the 17-3 on the crane and the barrel marking, been carrying a .22 mag in my truck ever since I posted this.
I hope to see it again this weekend.
Is $650 too much if it is a factory mismarked 95% gun w/ no box or docs?
Would it be possible to find a .22LR cylinder to fit it?
Thanks
