Next possible purchase decision
Let me preface this with a tad of background. I have always been a semi auto guy, but picked up a 10-5 earlier this year, and have been really loving it.
I had the opportunity to fire a model 63 3" the other day. I really enjoyed it, and was surprisingly accurate with this semi snubby. I liked it well enough to consider one for my next purchase down the road. My next thought was wondering if something like a model 60 would be even better. I just don't know if the feel of the weapon would be similar enough to contain the same "fun factor", or if it would be apples and oranges. The other question would be would a 4" barrel change things that dramatically? The 3" in a .38 would have the advantage of being a viable carry weapon.
I suspect the real answer would be to try them out and see. I may look into renting the centerfire versions of these in the near future, but thought I would ask here to try and get some good info before renting. My next purchase probably won't happen for another 5 months or so, due to money availability, but I really like to do my research prior to purchase.

If you like the 10-5, a 2 or 3" model 60 would be a good addition and carry gun. At this point in time it is actually more difficult to find .22 LR than .38 Special, but either an older 4" or current 3" model 63 would be nice if you have ammo.

Next........
My first is if you like the 63 you'll love the 317. It's defininatly Fun and not carry category but if you're stocked in your carry choices I vote for the 317.

I'm starting to see .22lr returning to the shelves. Not sure what the long term situation will be for .22. I suspect it will be readily available at some point. I do load my own .38 spl, so that is a plus on ammo. I currently have a carry weapon that I am happy with, but it would be nice to have a range weapon that could double as a carry weapon in a pinch.
I guess my main question is whether a model 60, or similar .38 would feel similar to the 63. I know the centerfire version will have a lot more recoil.
Not sure I would warm to a 2" barrel. I have experience with a 2" in a K frame. Didn't really care much for it.

Clov..
Consider a SW Mod 31 (.32SW Long)Great little J-Frame.Mine is a 4inch, mild recoil,and better than a tire iron in a pinch.Since you have awhile to shop it's a thought.

You might just try a 4 or 6" k22. For fun they're hard to beat!

Well, I went to the range today with my buddy. He has a range membership, which includes free rentals. I tried out the model 60 with a 3" barrel. I liked it, but it didn't really ring my chimes like the 63. Not sure I want to invest in another .22. I'll just have to think on it for a while. I will have a cash infusion early next year, and I like to plan ahead for purchases. I think I enjoy the anticipation almost as much as the purchase itself.
On a side note, I just keep getting smaller and smaller groups with my old model 10. I also got a chance to fire the M&P Shield in 40. Very accurate, hard trigger pull. Difficult to thumb safety. Nice size.

I prefer N-frames over K-frames over J-frames in terms of fun. If only they made an N-frame 22lr, I'd be a happy man. I have a lot of 22 revolvers. For revolvers, the S&W k-frames cannot be beat IMO. Maybe Korth makes a $5,000 22, but until I try that one, I'll stick with my model 17s.

A 56 ounce 8 3/8" model 617 may be what you need .

You know, I've had both a 6" and a 4" 617, and both are, IMO, ruined by the full underlug. I don't know what the reasoning behind putting a full underlug on them, but, for me, it makes them unpleasant to shoot, way too muzzle heavy. Now, I have a 17-8 with a full 6" underlug, but it feels much lighter and better balanced than the 617s. Due, I suppose, because of the lighter steel used and aluminum cylinder.
What I like about the N-frame over the k-frame is the action. Something about moving that big n-frame cylinder with the trigger just feels right.
