Default Model 67 No Dash

I found this forum when I was researching my Model 67. I had learned a great deal about it before finding this wonderful place. My problem is I did not take notes as to where I found the info. As of Thanksgiving it will be transferred to a young female cousin of mine.

It is a 4" Model 67 no dash and the SN is 13K9152. It is an OHB over-stamped CHP police trade-in which I purchased in 1991. It has a black rear sight. I thought it dated to 1974, but I have read that the 67 was introduced in 1974 with a stainless rear sight.

I'd appreciate a ship date, if you can provide one. I can fill in it's history since I've owned it, but I'd like to tell the young lady a bit more about it.

My 67 no-dash, #3Kxxxxx, was manufactured in 1972. I purchased it new in 1973. It has the stainless rear sight assembly. Afraid I know nothing about shipping dates.

My Model 67 3K89XXX was manufactured in 1972 also and has the stainless steel rear sight assembly. Your Model 67 serial number falls in the 1977 range according the SCSW. "With stainless steel adjustable micrometer click rear sight, later changed to a black rear sight" (quote from SCSW). No indication on when the switch was made. The -1 change was made in 1977, moving the gas ring from yoke to cylinder. So obviously your no dash Model 67 was made very early in 1977 or is a "transition gun", you never know with Smith & Wesson. I am by no means an expert on Smith&Wesson's though. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I thought it dated to my high school graduation in 1974, but it sounds like it was made when is was a Junior in college. Either way it is older than the girl that it is going to.

The story about the California Highway Patrol (CHP) mark over-stamped with OHB is the funny part of the tale of that gun anyway.

I'll call it 1976-1977 production.

Yes that date would be correct and the black rear sight would be correct. They only made the SS rear sight from 1972 through 1973 possibly some shipped in 1974.
