broken rear sight on 15-3 replaceable?
i may be picking up a 15-3 this week sometime, and the rear sight is broken. the gun is rough but he said bore is bright and it locks up good. i want it for a tractor gun, so i dont have to beat up my 586.
are these sights replaceable? got any idea where i may find one? what about aftermarket? i am not sure what is broken on it, maybe just the blade, maybe more. wont know til i get it home...
here is a pic from the seller...

Rear sight blades are available from S&W, but it's my understanding there is a technique to replacing it. It looks like there may be a problem with the front sight as well. The gun smithing section here may help.

i pm'd him and asked. he said it is just the sight blade is broken, so i will be good to go.
aint worried about the front sight as long as the height is right.

The blades require breaking the little lock nut on the left end, and a special spanner/driver to hold it when re-installing the new one, but they are available to buy. I just made my own from an extra Craftsman slotted driver. It was easy to do with a couple small needle files. Changing the blade is pretty easy otherwise. Just don't loose any parts when doing it.
I get mine right from S&W. The kit they send usually has the blade, screw, and nut.

That's the technique I was talking about.

Thanks yall.
Well i got it. Finish is bad with a good bit of rust around the trigger guard. Has a few burs here and there but nothing a lil file work wont take care of. I may have it refinished but i doubt it. If i do, i will only cold blue it because i am sure the metal has pits. As for the Pachs, i hollered at my buddy on the way home and swindled, er traded him out of some factory magnas he had on an old model 10 that is in similar shape. He says he's happy so who am i to argue. I figure at $500, i woulda paid too much. Luckily, i didn't have to pay that. She locks up tight as a drum, has a GREAT single action trigger pull, with a wide target trigger and relatively wide hammer spur. Oh, and the bore is bright as can be. I even have a Simply Rugged holster that fits it pretty decent. I told Ol Eaglestroker it wasnt worth a nice holster. (J/K Simply Rugged)
Pic with the magnas. i will call it... Tetanus.

For anyone needing to replace the S&W rear sight blade, buy a replacement blade and screw from Brownell's or Midway. It's a very simple job and no special tools or skills are needed, and the instructions are included. There is also a video on YouTube showing exactly how to do it.
I did it for the first time about a year ago on my Model 29. The screw and blade were rusted tightly together, and I broke the screw trying to move it, even with the use of penetrating oil. I learned it's a good idea to oil and exercise the rear sight windage screw occasionally, as after sighting in my Model 29 20 or so years ago, I don't think I ever moved it since.
