Any S&W stocks that I have seen don't appear to have any stain on them. There are several good threads on how to refinish them to look like new.

S&W did not stain stocks, they are always natural wood. During the period wood stocks were made by S&W several different forms of clear finishes were applied.
Sometimes you will see dark staining on the backs of the stocks around the perimeter. This is from the iron in the frame, not a deliberately applied stain.

Sometimes owners will be overly generous in their application of gun oil, and grips can be darkened from oil stains. I don't think staining was practiced much, if at all, during manufacture.
