Default Need help identifying a 38 special ctg

Hello all, I'm new to the forum and was posting to get some information on a gun I recently acquired from my father in law who is now retired from the Dallas Police Dept. I'll give as much information as I know. One side of the barrel says 38 S&W Special CTG the other just says Smith & Wesson. It's a hand ejector model with the cylinder ejecting to the left side. It's a 6 shot revolver with a 4" barrel and fixed sights. It appears to me to be nickle (silver) with a wood handle. Once ejecting the cylinder to the left it has Mod. 64-3 imprinted on the inside. There are also more numbers in there which I'm told don't mean anything but just in case the first set is F22 and the second is 09043 which I assume is an assembly number. Serial number stamped on the butt of the gun is 1D80XXX. It also has a stamp of DPP just above the trigger which my father in law told me was probably from the police dept. I figured if that was the case it would be DPD instead of DPP but oh well. I've actually had the gun for about 6 months now and it shoots really well. I've been shooting 38 special target rounds just for practice at my local gun range. Thanks in advance for any info.

Welcome! A model 64-3 also goes by the name .38 Military & Police Stainless. It is a K or medium frame gun with a heavy barrel; a similar model started production in 1970 and it was one of the standard police duty sidearms of the later 20th century. This one probably shipped in 1979 by the serial number beginning with the 1D, and a similar gun is still produced. It is fine for any factory .38 Special load, including those labeled +P.

The DPP stamp was put on by the department - Dallas Police Property? Someone here probably knows the answer. Enjoy!

Lovely old cop gun, and not that old. It's the stainless steel version of the Model 10 Military and Police. Try to hang onto it; there are few better guns to have in case of dire need. It was designed for cases of dire need!

Like your gun, many of these guns have external wear from carry in the elements but are near perfect inside. Many of us who carried these guns 'for business' believe that nothing feels better in the hand than a 10/64. I know I do.

I'd say a birthday in 1977.
