Christmas hand me down! Mod 60 no dash. Date and suggestions
Christmas came early this year and pops was feeling merry. Got a hand me down that has been sitting in a safe for quite some time. SS mod 60 no dash 2" 38spl. Love the way the gun feels and was looking for a date range. SN: 479xxx. Spent a few hours reading on the boards and getting excited about shooting this. Thought I should go ahead and register to say hello bc I know I will have some more questions.
Hope all are having a wonderful holiday.

Welcome to the Forum. I will guess your gun is a 64 or 65 year gun. Someone with better knowledge will help out. Post some pics when you can.

It is an early one, but more likely 1966-'67. Merry Christmas and enjoy!

The serial number range for 1966 was 409001-491503, so there you go, it's a 1966. Second production year gun.

Good info. My M36 is 442XXX and in previous posts people said 66-67, so now its narrowed down to 66 - probably mid year sometime...

That's not a hand-me-down, it's one of them " Hair-looms!"
Your father was really in the Christmas Spirit. Congratulations on a fine gift. I don't know about its family history, but it is a very desirable revolver to own. Also, welcome to the Forum!

These are the best, glad you get to carry forward! Did he give you any ammo to go with it?

Thanks for the quick reply. Looks like a very active board. No ammo and I have not shot this gun in 15 years. Def a great gift from dad's collection. Will take some getting used to for such a short barrel. Thinking about some mods but will keep all the original parts so I could go back if I wanted. I have big hands so a grip change is prob first on the list. Hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas Day.

Santy Claws was sure good to you! I'm jealous...all I got was a lump of coal & a loaf of banana bread.

Definately keep the old parts as they are unique to that gun,
Those very early Model 60's have features not found in later models like the diamond Magna grips and SS internal parts making them fairly sought after by J frame collectors.
And post some pics ASAP !

Would the diamond magnas be the standard grips on a 36 of the same age?

Great hand-me-down. I have xlg hands too and use the Pachmeyer large grips for the range when shooting my J frame. I then switch to the small wood magnas w/grip adapter & self defense ammo (the way it's carried) for about 15 - 20 rounds.

Dang.
Your dad gave you that Smith, from his personal collection?
He must love you. I'd keep it and shoot it and NEVER sell it.
J frames are perfect pocket revolvers.
I have the blue younger brother to that and it goes everywhere with me.
The great thing about that stainless steel is you can repair scratches in the finish easily.
That, and the ease of cleaning/maintenance.

Actually yes but no,
They will interchange because they are the same size but
IIRC early Model 60 diamond grips were unique because they had SS washers where standard J's had black washers.
