Default Fantasy pricing on 19-4

I recently saw a NIB 19-4 (1980) with box and papers. Asking price is $1200. Doesn't appear to be anything other than a very nice revolver. Are there any variants of the 19-4 that would command this price in today's market, or is this as far out of line as I think it is?

Thanks

It's high, by 75-100% depending on its barrel length, in my opinion.

It's high, indeed, but getting increasingly less so.

I've seen folks list the limited run, agency marked 19s for around $1200; never seen them sell for that.

What I keep in mind when I see crazy high asks like that is:

1) The seller's understandably hoping for a lucky sell.

2) The seller's trying to gauge market value by baiting highest offers.

3) The seller's simply beginning with their most hopeful number, no different than my lowball counteroffer.

It's a 4". I was thinking $800, tops, for a near perfect specimen.

In a private sale, classifieds or on an auction site, yes, $800 is about right...at the moment.

There are some online dealers with reputations for top quality, collectible condition items who consistently ask ultra premium prices like $1200 for an NRA "perfect" Model 19 with box, tools and docs. I presume they often find a buyer who'll pay that premium in return for the easy hunt and presumed certainty of top condition.

NIB? Don't be surprised when it sells.

I would happily pay $1200 for a NIB 4" 19.

A 19-4, NO.

I'm sure it probably will. What I've found is that most dealers around here are absolutely unwilling to budge , knowing that someone will come along and buy it if they give it 6-12 months.

The question is if that someone is me.

Ah, a fellow technician. Yes, in replying to OP's question, I was referring to the more common 19-4s by their broader model designation, 19, not to a no dash, for which I'd also cough up $1200 for a NIB example.

This type of pricing is a common dilemma. If a buyer has $1200 burning a hole in their pocket, just wants it and doesn't care about paying over market value (i.e., doesn't expect to turn it around for a profit any time soon), it would be "worth it". With a big enough bank account this works for some.

that is high. If you want a true NIB 19-4, you had better plan on parting with $750-800 minimum. Even if you think prices are higher than justified, honest NIB pre-lock P&R guns are getting harder to find all the time.

My guess is it will sell sooner than you think.

IMHO this time of year (Dec and Jan) folks have more money to spend. So a higher priced item has a better chance of selling.

It happens with real estate too. Sellers sometime ask a ridiculous price just to see if somebody is that ignorant. Sometimes it does work. A smart guy once said something like a sucker is born every minute.
