Default My “new” S&W 30-1... and grip documentation help please

Hey all,

I got myself a nice 30-1 recently. :-)

I say “nice”... the blueing is a little compromised in places
Mainly on the cylinder, it’s not wear, don’t know how to call it, anybody tell from this closer up picture?
Probably not, but it's sort of speckly or mottled looking.

But it’s from 1971-72 according to the s/n, so that IS closing in on a half century old.
And the bore looks bright, non-pitted, with sharp rifling.
Action and timing seem just fine.
And I’ve been wanting a .32 S&W Long j-frame for a while.
So I’m REAL happy to have it!, cosmetically challenged though it may be.

My question is about the grips that came on the revolver.
I LOVE THEM!

I have big hands/long fingers and these grips feel GREAT in my hands.

My Question is:

Exactly what would be the “name” of these grips?
Or... how would I “specify” them?
(note: the inset silver medallions are S&W logo, but I don’t know if that means they are S&W grips necessarily)

The issue is: I want MORE of these, for some other j-frames I have.
And I want to know exactly what to call them, how to specify the grip I am looking for if I place a “Want to Buy” ad.

I can of course include a picture of these grips in the WTB ad,
but I certainly would like to call them by their proper designation (instead of “lookin’ for a pair of these here grips”).

Bonus Question would be: if anybody has a pair, or knows the best route for me to take to a pair. WTB ad on this forum?

Much obliged,

James

P.S. And are these still in production? By Smith? Third party? Or am I looking for old/used/vintage grips?
(which I guess I might prefer actually, unless there is a beeg $ difference between new production and vintage)

J frame Targets. Made by S&W when they made their own wooden stocks, which they no longer do. They fit both round (like yours) and square butt frames.

Since the stock pin is in the same location on "I", "Improved I", and "J" frames, the J Target stocks will fit any of these frame sizes. These used to show up quite regularly on E-Bay.

I've also heard them called round-to-square-butt grips.

Good information above. Note these were made in the 1970s (yours, with the blued stock washers) and in a slightly different form in the 1980s (with silver washers and a different checkering pattern). Happy hunting!

I bought a pair just like those, off Ebay, for my 3" 31-1 (Square butt brother or yours)
They are VERY comfortable.
I wish the K/L frame targets were made just like these.
