Model 27 Barrel Lengths
I have a 1972-1973 vintage M27 .357 mag w/a six-inch barrel. I see there's some out there (especially newer ones) with 6 1/2 inch barrels. When did SW standardized the six or six and a half inch length?

According to SCSW, the 6-1/2" barrel was discontinued in 1967.

The 6 1/2-inch length was dropped from the catalog in the late 60s, but Model 27-2s with a 6 1/2-inch barrel continued to be made until the early 70s (using up of inventory).

Like any decision S&W makes, it's for the money! 6 1/2" denotes classic Smith to a lot of folks, and they would like to cash in on that......
