I'm in negotiations to purchase this gun. Haven't held it in my hands yet, but assuming lockup, timing, endshake, etc. are all good, what's a fair price based on the attached photos.

Hard to say. It may be dirty, oily, or worn in spots. Better pictures are needed for an accurate estimate. In excellent condition it would be a very desirable model.

Well, unfortunately those are the pictures I have. Assuming worst case (that everything you see is wear) and best case (that it is all smudges and dirt) what is the low value to high value range?

Agree dan...There is about a 4-500 dollar difference from an S Serial and an N Serial Number 4 Inch 29-2...

If it is in nice shape and an S serial with Box, Docs, & Tools..Its a 1200-1400 dollar revolver...

If its a N Serial and the above Holds true its a 900-1000 dollar revolver..

Just my .02 cents anyways..

I would say worst case 750.00, best case 950.00. The revolver looks pretty nice so Im assuming its smudges and oil. I am not allowing for a mojor ploblem not evident in the pics or the craziness that might ensue if it were to go nuts on an auction. I am considering that a nice case like that is worth probably 150.00 in today's market. Good luck to you.

If the presentation case is original I am sure its and N numbered 29. Based on the fact that the lining is still in nice condition and not the ruberized overlay that always falls apart, its probably a 75-77 gun. Maybe N500k to N600k would be my guess. Maybe N700k.

Still Need to know if its a N Or S Serial..Makes a HUGE difference in Price...And the Presentation Case makes me think its darn near a 1969ish revolver which might lead it to be an S Serial Number

In these parts, High Wholesale would be about $550. High Retail would be about $900. Actual selling prices are all over the map. A pal of mine just bought a crispy 4" Nickle 29-2 in the case, probably from the same era, in a private sale for $350. Asking price was $400 and in the boldest move I've seen lately, he counter offered at $300. They met in the middle.

Some people just stumble through life looking for someone to "pluck" them. I'll bet when Many saw your post he shed a tear he missed that deal.

I don't think there is a lot of value difference between a late S(lacking diamond stocks) prefix and an N prefix, i know people might ask more for them but I'll only pay a premium for an S gun with diamond stocks, a late 60s S would only mean a few bucks more to me. This gun looks like an N prefix.

Kris-

We seldom disagree...But I do however disagree with you on this one...I would put a Premium on a 1969 S Serial over a 1970+ N Serial...

Gunbroker last week ran back to back examples of a 1969 S that took bids to 1200 and didnt hit reserve no box, nothing..

Same revolver, but N serial about N2XXXXX range with pres case, docs, and tools didnt take a bid at a grand...

Im not sure what it is about a 1969 S serial 4 inch 29, but they seem to bring a much higher premium...

However....I prefer the S Serial and Diamond grips as well...and will seldom buy unless it has that combo...Unless I run into what Drews Buddy ran into!! Then I BUY BUY BUY, and I know we agree on that...

Couldnt do it to that lil guy, too precious!!!

Here's my S Numbered 29-2 in the clam shell case. Its a 63 model like me, but the years have been much kinder to it than me.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pse729230a.jpg

I also would agree that an S numbered revolver will command a premium. Kinda like a P&R verses a non P&R, might not be better just brings more money.

Lowrider, 410, and anyone else who said "N prefix" - you're all winners! Seller confirmed it via email...

Bid? This isn't an auction - its a local sale. Did you see an auction with the same pictures I posted?

Yup. All four pictures right here. Seller is listed in Spokane (obviously local to you), but has no feed back, which is why I didn't touch it. Very good price + no review = stay away, for me. S&W 44 Mag 29-2 P Box Pinned,Recessed NO RESERVE : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

Well, I made a deal with the guy. $700 cash + an old G3 MacBook that I paid $150 for over 3 years ago. So I'm basically into it for $750-$850, depending on whether you consider what I paid for the MacBook ($150) or what its currently worth (probably around $50-$75 if you could even find someone to buy it). Since I wasn't using the old Mac for anything it was worth next to nothing to me.

Anywho, it is indeed an N prefix gun - serial number N498XXX. The condition is excellent IMO. VERY tight, only a hint of a turn line, and a little holster wear at the muzzle. I'd rate the finish and condition at 95% or better. His pictures don't EVEN come close to doing it justice. It's pretty dirty, and has lots of finger prints on it, but should clean up beautifully.

Turns out he did have it listed on GB, and had one bid for $850. I felt a little guilty (for about 3 seconds) until he told me he was already planning on cancelling the auction anyway in favor of a local sale - because he needs the cash quicker than what he would have got it through the auction.

So I'm quite happy with my purchase.

You got a good deal, that's a very desirable revolver and interest (as well as value) will go no where but up.
