Default Model 67, no love?

It seems that while all the other K frames get lots of attention the 67 seems to be the "red headed step child" (no offense to red heads or step children implied). I know there's a fondness for the 10, 15, 19 & 66 but the 67 just doesn't seem to garner the same level of appreciation.

I had one in 1977 when the 66 was impossible to come by, it went away when I got the 66-1 (which in turn went away when I moved to semis).

Next week I'm bringing home a very nice 67-1 and doing a search here I didn't come across much. I enjoy shooting the .38spl more than any other caliber in wheel guns (almost as much as my .45acp 1911).

Perhaps it was the timing of the 67, coming along as the 66 became, especially in law enforcement, "the" gun to have.

So just some random thoughts on an increasingly chilly Friday night. Any thoughts the more knowledgeable would like to share will be greatly appreciated.

About 35 years ago I gave one to a young lady I was seeing as a replacement for the war trophy Luger she got from her father. It still guards her bedside when I am not around. Loaded with Nyclad hollow points she had no difficulty qualifying for her CCL recently.

It's a stainless Model 15 - what's not to like?

I, too, have been looking for 67 fanciers around here. Glad you spoke up.
I love my first series. .38 Special is a classic caliber, and a blast to shoot. There is something elegant about the pencil barrel and exposed ejector rod that outclasses my long gone M66 (stolen by The Federales on a camping trip to Mexico circa 1980).

Let's all enjoy our classy 67s

Default A bit of love here, too

This one came into the LGS from an estate.
So nasty they wanted nothing to do with it.
Doubt that it had ever been cleaned.
Gross rubber stocks.
Picked it up for $150.
A lot of cleaning and fixing finally made it presentable:

Has to have been a labor of love.

I picked up this one a while back. Really one of my favorites. Buford57 is quite right, "it's a stainless Model 15- What's not to like?"

Perfectly nice guns.I never had an interest in shooting 357 magnums, however I always purchased magnum guns for 38 special shooting,as I just liked the looks of the partial lug barrel(plus the magnum guns could be had with 3Ts)

If you use the Search Site/Google function for model 67 you should get 9,220 links. Plenty to peruse for the rest of the winter (June? August?)

Default 67's

I am a big fan of the 67 / 15 series....my first issued sidearm was a 15 ( 1973).....I have been a NRA "citizen" instructor for 40 yrs as well as a LE instructor ( 30yrs) and in the 70, 80's and into the 90's when I had students ask me what sidearm to equip themselves with, my first choice was the model 67.....I had a lot of students buy 67's, and they were never disappointed. The Combat Masterpiece is aptly named, whether it is blued steel or stainless.

Thanks for speaking up, good to see the appreciation of this fine revolver. I posted about the one I found a few days ago, hope to bring it home no later than next week. I'll put up before and after photos when I get it. It was a cop's gun, carried a lot, shot very little, ugly Pachs but have the proper grips ready for it when I do get it.

A 67 wasn't on my wish list, but my brother had one that he was willing to sell, so I bought it. Now that I have it, my appreciation for this gun has increased. It is my first and only stainless S&W (for now).

To find appreciation for the Model 67 you have but to mention it in a thread and post a picture.

The Model 15 and 67 are basicly the same gun in different metals but the 15 has alot more history behind it and
I suspect that is the reason for the 67 running in 2nd place.

Perhaps the timing of the introduction was also a factor in the 67's mediocrity as where the Model 15 came out 6 or 7 years before the Model 19 giving it some time to distinguish itself in the field ,
The Model 67 came out a few years after the Model 66's unveiling sometimes making the 67 the 2nd choice for LEO's that could not find a Model 66 as mentioned above.

A little history, when it first appeared in 1949 the Combat Masterpiece was just a shorter barrel version of the 6" K38 Masterpiece and identical except for the barrel length .
The 6" K38 saw a wide rib barrel/frame phased in around 1950 and the tapered 6" was slowly phased out by 1955.

The 5 screw Combat Masterpiece was originally available in matte blue with a High speed "Fishhook" hammer, around 1955/56 they begin to appear in polished blue, 1957 they changed to the 4 screw design and a semi target hammer,
That year also saw the introduction of model marking , the 15-1 had a 4 screw frame with the new left hand threaded ejector rod/cylinder
The 15-2 was the first 3 screw and had diamond Magnas until 1967 when the non diamond Magnas were phased in,
Around 1968 the 15-3 revision relocated the rear site screw,

1972 Model 67 is INTRODUCED originally with SS rear site soon changed to black rear site.

1977 the 15-4 and 67-1 gas ring was moved from yoke to cylinder and eventually dropped the barrel pin in 1982 ,

This was the end of the tapered barrel Model 15/67 as the Model 15-5 and 67-3 had a wide rib heavy barrel profiles.
The Model 67 continued into the 67-6 revision and the Model 15 to the 15-9 revision in 2002.

A new IL Model 15 appeared recently with a shrouded ejector rod but I do not see it in their current lineup.
The Model 67 is in the current lineup with two piece barrel, MIM and IL.

Models 67 (L) and 67-1 (R)

As was said, a stainless M-15 what's not to like!
Here's mine I lucked into last year. As I get older I appreciate the white outline rear and red insert front more and more as this dash one has. Enjoy yours!

Wanted to mention that S&W first introduced a SS version of their Model 36 Chiefs special around 1965 as the Model 60 perhaps to test interest but it makes sense considering that the 36 was intended to be carried close to the body etc.

Their second offerings were in 1970 of the Model 19 and 10 as the Models 66 and Model 64 respectively followed in 1972 by the Models 15 and 13 in SS as the Models 67 and 65 respectively .

Although a SS prototype of the Model 18 was evaluated in 1970 as the possible future Model 65 it never became a cataloged item and the model number was instead awarded to the SS version of the Model 13 two years later .

S&W also either never offered certain other models in SS such as the 14 and 28 or not until many years later as in the Model 16 and 27 .
When you consider the models they chose to offer in SS it appears their primary focus was 4" duty weapons and snubs although I dont really understand the Model 63's delay coming out until 1977 but having a lower Model number.

It is interesting to note that the pendulum eventually swung the other way making SS thier primary offering with only certain special "Classics" being offered in blued steel.
Also interesting they never offered the Model 28 in SS as its key attraction was price and SS requires no blueing, perhaps SS material offset the 28's Matte blueing costs but it must have still taken more man hours to finish ?

Default First duty weapon

Nice thread. I actually was issued a 67 (no dash) when employed as a Federal Officer way back in 83-86'. I never shot anything better! Scored a x276 and held record for many years at my station. Definately an overlooked and under-appreciated item. Thanks for the memories!

I have two consecutive serial numbered 67-1's (1980 models) NIB. purchased off Gunbroker a few years ago. Picked up the first one, then the seller contacted me a week later, he 'forgot' he had the second one. Couldn't let a deal like that get away.

I just picked up another 67 all stainless off GB this week, it is practically new in box as well. Was going to shoot it, but..looks too pretty...so, will go in safe too!

Actually there was a stainless version of the model 14, the model 68. Designed for the California Highway Patrol, it looks like a 6" barreled model 66, but in .38 only as CHP did not want their officers to have .357 capability. I am not aware of a stainless model 16. The 16 is the K-32 masterpiece. I don't think it sold well enough to be offered in stainless, but if there is a stainless K-32, I want one! Perhaps you mistyped and meant 17? There is a stainless version, the 617.
Anyway, as to the OP's comments. I think that the 67 isn't seen much because it falls into that category of whoever has 'em keeps 'em. I found my 67-1 at a now closed LGS for $200 out the door. It came with the factory targets pictured on it. A few months later, I was lucky enough to win an original box in a karma raffle right here on this forum! I've only seen two others since for sale and they were both more than twice what I paid. It's a perfect package, the balance of the Combat Masterpiece combined with the shootability and controllability of the .38 special cartridge, which has modest recoil and muzzle blast even in defensive loadings, topped off with the durability of stainless. I've shown it before, but I can't resist an excuse to show it again. Here's my 67-1:

Default Model 67

I just got one of these a week or so ago that is an early production with the stainless rear sight. Serial No 3K36XXX I have a question for vrichard about the photos of his gun. On your hammer there is a clear "dimple" for lack of a better word, under the firing pin rivet. Can you tell me it it came like that from the factory? Any idea what that is about? What serial number range is your gun? Anyone else seen that before? Had to go and look at all my stainless revolvers and I do not have one so marked. Thanks, Kyle

The Model 67 was the first Smith & Wesson revolver I bought some years ago with my hard earned cash and I never want to get rid of it. Mine is a 67-2 and the grips on this gun have one of the most amazing fit I've ever seen. Just like every K frame it's perfect balance and point of aim make it a reliable shooter. I actually love this revolver as much as my Model 66.

As you can see there is a wide fan base for the Model 67 and that is no accident. The model 67, and it's blue companion Model 15, feature the best balance in the hand of any revolver made. They simply "feel" right. As a result they are very easy to shoot well and comfortable to shoot all day long. What's not to like about that.

I also like the 15/67 models but I have not seen many of either model for sale in my area in the last ten years. There was a nickel pre 15 in a Otto, NC pawn shop a month ago, but not a factory nickel. I was disappointed when I bought this three years ago and realized it was not a .38 special.

Everytime the subject of 38 Special K Frame S&W's comes up I think to myself, Why does S&W continue to make them???

Why not make all of them 357 Mags. That gives the owners the ability to shoot both cartridges...

Yes, I know back in the day, some PD's would only want their Officers to carry 38 Specials...

I buy every round butt M 67 that I encounter. I have been known to turn them into 357 mags as it is very easy to do. I recently obtained a 'no dash' with the SS rear sight that was a young man's grandfather's bedside gun. He inherited it and lucky me only 'likes' semi-autos. It is NIB with box and tools. It only shows a slight turn line from being dry fired. This one I'm going to sell because it is the square butt version. ........ Big Cholla

Certainly a favorite here on the forum...here's mine, which was issued to me, new in the box, by the LAPD. I bought it upon retirement and sent it to the factory for a glass-bead and tune-up.
Bob

With my LAPD Hoyt breakfront and the original Pachmayrs I bought for it in the academy in '84

I noticed in your list you also left out the 64. I bought my first handgun, a 64-3, off a buddy for $120. I love it. There is something about the K frame that I love. The triggers are fantastic. As far as K frame service revolvers are concerned I'm happy with the 64 (and my model 10). A 14, 15 and 67 will come eventually. Thanks for sharing.

Where would we be if the 38 special caliber was never designed?

I'm not familiar with the model 67 it surely looks like a neat revolver. But when I purchased my very first revolver in 38 special the pre m15 combat masterpiece made me realize how awesome a 38 special revolver could be.
Every time I open the safe I have to fondle it. What a work of revolver art they really are.

What a hands on museum we could have where everyone could touch and enjoy these fine weapons.

I bought a Model 67 to serve as the donor gun for my Project 616 but found out that the standard barrel dimensions didn't match up to my Model 617 donor barrel, so ended up using a Model 66 instead. Meanwhile, the Model 67-1 was cleaned up and a couple of small problems dealt with. Although it shot and handled very well, with the completion of my "616" and the acquisition of a 6" Model 686, it just didn't fit into my shooting program, so I wholesaled it to a dealer friend and still made a profit. He's had it for a couple of months now with what seems like a fair retail price, but last time I saw him, he still owned it. Go figure!

Hey 357, forum member robbt sometimes has them in his post, down there in the non-gun for sale ads.

No lack of love from me. In another thread I told the tale of how I decided to try my M67 at an NRA instructor's school (I had been shooting a 1911). A pure-stock M67, no Goodyears or fancy stocks, using plain 38 Spcl RNL, no practice runs I came within one point of my best score with the 1911. It took a couple of years for the significance of that to sink in but I now own no 1911s. I just wish I had not had to sell that M67, I may buy a new one (i see lots of used M15s around here but never any used M67s).

Oh, yeah, and the M64 is very close in performance.

4" stainless 38 Special, what's not to love?

I have one Model 67, and it's a newer model with the two-piece barrel and IL. For all its supposed faults, it is a great revolver, and I've put many. many wadcutters through it since I purchased it.

With one Model 67, it would be better if I had more. Whenever I enter a gun or pawn shop, that is the first thing I look for. I'll find another in good shape for a decent price one of these days. The quest continues......

Default Model 67's

The wife has a 67 and I have a 67-1 (and a 15-3). If I run across any more here in Kali, I will not hesitate to buy them!
We like 'em.

I was lucky enough to get a 67-1 a few years back. I then sent it to S&W and had their master revolver action tune package applied. It is about as perfect as a revolver can get in my opinion.

The finish is a little rough, but I understand that stainless steel actually cleans up well with a little bit of Scotchbrite. I may try that. I may also get it glass beaded like OIF2's above. That's a very nice-looking revolver!

3 year old thread...

But I just found a 67-1 that dates to 1983 in a local shop and bought it on a whim. It doesn't have a pinned barrel, and it has a few tiny scratches, but the cylinder and bore look unfired to me, especially on the front face of the cylinder.

I didn't know much about this particular model of S&W revolver, and it's definitely not one of the more popular ones, so the price hadn't been driven through the roof yet here in CA.

Blued, pre-IL revolvers have become very pricey here. Even the formerly ubiquitous Model 10 has become expensive, so when I saw the 67, even though I prefer blued, I had to get it. I also recently found a pinned and recessed Model 65 in the local classified ads, so now I have 2 SS K frames. I shot the 65 at an indoor range and even though the sights are tiny, it shoots great and is surprisingly accurate.

Time to get to the range!

Shirojiro, as somebody said here 3 years ago, "what's not to like?" I had a Model 67-1 a few years ago that was supposed to be the donor for a project, but it turned out not to fit and was such a pleasant gun to handle and to shoot it ended up being sold to a dealer as-was... it was just too nice to alter. If you think your Model 65 is nice, you're probably going to love this Model 67! Congratulations.

I had a post about this gun a few months ago, was in a local pawn shop that has a nice gun counter looking at a pocket h&r .22. The gun guy practically begged me to take this 67 for $200, I said ok

before and after a little flitz work and some finger groove combats. Accurate, great trigger, may be the best $200 I ever spent.

Another Zombie Thread but I'll play. I think the Model 67 was probably the least produced K frame but who wouldn't love a Stainless Combat Masterpiece. Mine was carried for many years as a snake gun when fishing.

Default A THING OF BEAUTY

I think my 67 no dash shown below is a thing of beauty and
a joy for a long time. It shoots just as well as it looks.

The leather in 3rd from left is Tom Threepersons from
El Paso Saddlery.
4th from left is a model #624 by S. D. Myres.
5th from left is by Oliver O. Ball

Default Mine's on the way.....

I just did a deal for a 67-1 from a forum member yesterday.

Gun should be shipped today.

Can't wait to get it in. Should make a nice companion for the Model 18-3 I just found.

No more play money for me for a while.........

I have to comment since this older thread was resurrected. I can imagine CB's disappointment if he was anticipating a .38 Special, although it's hard to imagine that the gun was bought apparently without much inspection! But I cannot imagine being disappointed with that dandy .22LR model. Shoot, there are more of the .38 calibers out there, and the search is about as much fun as actual ownership. But to explain my comment, I guess my favorite caliber is .22LR followed very closely by the .38 Special. I think everybody ought to own at least one of each!

Default Model 67 No Dash

I bought this Model 67 no dash in 2004 (if I recall correctly) at my local gun store in Midland, TX. I paid $250 for it just as it appears in the attached photos.

Even more Model 67 love.
This one is a trade in from the police of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas.
After a fair amount of work, I use it for field pistol silhouette matches at my club:

Shoots a +P handload 160 grain RN at 955 FPS.

No love for the 67? Heck, I know someone who traded straight up a 3" 13-3 for a 67.

I have to agree with that 100%.

Mine is a 67-6 (my only gun with an IL), and I shoot it and my old 15-5 better than just about anything else I own...
