S&W never used black material to cover the top and bottom liners in a case. The early 57 cases (about the first year) were lined in dark blue velour. A few cases in mid-65 were lined with blue satin and then came the "clamshell" cases with dark blue flocking over the Styrofoam top and bottom.

Default velour case

Doc, is the top of the case styrofoam (like the full clamshell) or sponge?

I haven't actually looked, but the top liner in the case is soft, so I assume it is sponge rubber.

Default Liners

The bottom liners is not Styrofaom. It is made of some kind of poly foam that was die cut in two layers about 1/2" thick then glued together.

This is the color of the velour lining. It is very difficult to find, in fact I'm still looking for the correct shade to cover this set of liners.
