Default 29-2 trade opinions wanted.

I have a 4" nickel 29-2 (TH/TT/TG). It is an "N" prefix gun. Lock-up and timing are excellent. All of the nickel plating is intact, but it shows wear from carry and use. Basically, it is a nice shooter. However, I would like a 6" gun. I have the opportunity to trade for a 6" blued 29-3 (TH/TT/TG) advertised as near-new. Pictures show it isn't absolutely pristine, though.

Neither gun have their box/papers/tools.

I know that P/R guns are typically considered more valuable by collectors than later guns, but mine is not in collector's condition. I want a 6" shooter so I'm inclined to make the trade, straight-up.

Are the values of the two guns close enough for such a trade or would I be giving up a substantially more valuable gun?

Opinions are much appreciated. Thank you.

I guess it depends on how much you want the 6" and how much he wants a nickel 4". I would guess they are close enough in value that if you want his gun a lot that you could make the trade and feel ok about it. However, the P&R guns have a little more value to most of us, and with the nickel being uncommon, you have some bargaining arguments if you wish. Also, 4" guns bring a slight premium, I believe. So, you can argue from some cash also.
I assume you have not handled the gun, as you mentioned pictures. To me, the mechanics of the gun are very important, as to carry up, trigger, smooth functioning, check barrel for bulges etc.
Bottom line, here, it is about what you are willing to give up to get what you want. :-)

I hate getting rid of any gun. I made some big mistakes in the past that now I can't undo or replace. I regret it even when it happened 35 years ago.
Unfortunately I was out of work and I traded in some guns to take the cash to purchase tractors I could repair and make more money. It worked and I had a repair business going for quite a few years.
Now my idea was to repurchase them again. But they were discontinued.
I'm bummed to this day.

Being out of work during each recession I never let things get bad nor let my children feel the brunt from it there lives were always kept the same. They had clothes, food, a warm house and love. But to this day going through all the bad times made my children stronger.
They say if dad can do it we can make it through anything too.
The kids watched me make money from nothing. I started buying fixing and selling everything. It's good teaching for the kids about survival in this world that can be a jungle at times and try to eat us up.

Enough said buy it don't trade.

well, 4 inch 29's are a hot item right now, nickel is something like 10 percent of a "production run"
6 inch blued 29's are out there and common, the non P&R will lower the price to a collector , however as a shooter the later dash 3's and up have the upgrades..
it's a personal preference to what you want, me personally I'd keep the 4 inch..or look for something more of an even trade. like a P&R gun..
being from NE Ohio, I can understand the want for a 6 inch gun, The 4 inch can't really be used for anything more than " plinking/ target shooting". Or a really big CCW gun..
I have a bunch of 29's/629's and my most favorite carry around/bumming around in the woods is a 4 inch P&R 29, hunting season it switches to a 629-4 six inch just to be legal..

I love P&R guns. That being said, the later guns are usually the more accurate ones. There is nothing wrong with a 29-3, and if you want a 6" gun the -3s are a good choice. Right now, it won't have the resale value of a P&R gun, but who knows what the future will hold?

BTW, I'm in the market for a 28-3, there weren't all that many of them made since production ended in '83....I have no idea how many 29-3s were made, but if the production run was smallish, it might be an investment opportunity....

Simple solution: keep the 4" and offer to buy the 6".

See how easy that was?

:-)
