Snagged a Mod 49.
VG shape with the box and paperwork. Been looking for one for pocket carry but most I have seen locally have been pretty rough IF I can find one. SN puts it in the early 80s from what I can tell but it does have a pinned barrel. Looks like it was shot very little, there is a little bluing wear at the front of the barrel but that's about it.
One thing I was wondering was that the numbers on the grips do not match the SN, did they quit doing that and is it just a part number by that time frame? It doesn't look like it was ever monkeyed with. I paid $385 so not a great deal but I like the 49 better then the fully shrouded models and the newer one's.
Thanks!

IMO $385 is a "Great Deal" for a pinned Model 49.
Post some pics when you get a chance of the gun and inside grip number.
They could have been swapped but its no big deal on a carry gun.
For pocket carry if you like the model 49 checkout the Model 38 airweight version,
There is also a SS version in the Model 649 and an airweight SS version in the 638...ENJOY

299635 is the number on the inside of the grips. J861xxx is the SN# on the frame. Grip condition matches the frame condition. Box number matches the gun, typical blue box with the little metal clips on the sides. Has the paperwork but not the cleaning stuff.

Well if that is how you feel...I will give you $385 and pay shipping! You did very well. They are going for $450 and up here. And that is without a box. So smile, you did great! Photo's would be nice.

I bought this one in 1975 from an FBI SA who had just gotten it back from the smiths at Quanitico. Paid him $75 for the gun, 2 holsters (one a Hank Sloan model), original grips, a set of new Herrett Shooting Ace grips, and 300 rds of 148 gr WC and 200 rds of W-W 158 gr LSWCHP+P.
I carried as my 2nd, off duty, and undercover gun uniil 1995 when I came across a 649 for a good price.

Sometimes it's pretty hard for me to figure out pricing as the most recent S&W book prices always seem low.

You got a smoking good deal!
The 49 is second only to the M38 as a pocket firearm and easier to shoot well.
Congratulations!
