Value of my Highway Patrolman 28-2 .357?
Hi there,
Please see the attached photo below...
I bought this HP .357 at an auction probably 20 years ago. It's an N246XXX S/N with two barrels, Pachmayr and original grips, original box and even the S&W 'wrapping' paper inside the box...
It's in decent but used condition. I use it as my back up house protection firearm and have fired a few time, but not lately... Nothing wrong with the gun...
Any idea of the value?
Thank you for taking the time to read this request and reply if you have any ideas!

Welcome to the Forum.
That's a nice one. They are skyrocketing in price right now. In that condition you could probably get close to $600 for it.
Just curious, why the extra barrel?

I agree with P&R Fan. The popularity of the HP is on the rise, especially those with a 4" barrel. It used to be you would see several at every gun show, and the prices were not high. In the '80s and '90s, I bought several for well under $300. The 6" variant did not show up nearly as often. Now the situation is reversed. I see 6" HPs at nearly every show and rarely see the 4" variant. When I do see one, the guy wants three arms and two legs for it.
I, too, am puzzled by the second barrel. I wonder what that is about.
I had one of my 4" HPs at the range this week. Here is the result:

I forgot to mention one thing:
Be sure to monitor that set of Pachmayr grips on that gun, if you are storing it that way. These "Goodyears" tend to accumulate moisture under them and if you don't take care of it, you will eventually develop some corrosion under them, especially at the top where they cover the rear portions of the frame. When cleaning the gun after a range session, remove the stocks and wipe that area down with a Hoppe's dampened patch. Then wipe it dry and replace the stocks, making sure they are also dry.
Those small steps will help protect your investment.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies gents... Good tip about the Pachmyr grips holding moisture - I pulled them off just now to check, and the frame is fine. I think I dodged a bullet with that, forgive the pun, because of the semi-arid climate here in the San Diego area...
I don't know why it had the 6 inch barrel with it. I had actually forgotten I had it until pulling it down again to take the picture of the box and extras... Like I was saying, I bought the whole thing at an auction years ago as my first gun, and always thought of it as my "cheap" .357, since I also have a Colt Python brushed nickel .357 I compare it to...
Thanks again for the quick assessment gentlemen, and advice...

Look at the end label on the box. Is there anything in the "Special Features" section? Maybe there is a reference to an extra barrel . . .
That would be neat. It could mean it was special ordered with two barrels.

I know what you mean. I lived in El Cajon when I was a kid (age 9-19). Left in 1969, ended up in 'Nam. Then moved to Oregon for 10 years, and finally to Alaska 30 years ago.
Don't really miss SoCal much. But the weather down there was great!

First, Welcome to the forum!
That "package" on the opposite end of the country could bring you as much as 650 bucks. The added barrel is a strange one indeed.
You would be very hard pressed to replace that in California. It would be wise to hang on to it!

The complete package usually adds about $100 so I would say $550 to $600.

Because of the Barrel swap I would value it lower than an original 4" Gun.Probably around the $500 range.

I'm going to be odd man out, once again. First there was no mention of a barrel swap, just a 6" barrel included with the revolver. Second I don't see any signs of holster ware, muzzle ware, "blast damage" on the flutes of the cylinder, and a very faint turn line.
I'm thinking that with a good deep cleaning, a coat of wax, and replacing those ugly rubber grips with the factory magnas that should be a $750.00 revolver. Specially in California.
O/P check several of the auction sites and local gun sellers to get an idea of the value.

I'm with Alex....I suspect barrel swap. I'd be interested to know if the end label matches serial # on gun and what the label says for barrel length. I guess the other option could be a previous owner had intentions to swap but never did.
If it's an original 4" I say $650-$700. If it's a barrel swap it's not any more than $500 in my eyes.
Hopefully OP will show us a pic of the end label ....
