Mod 66 No-Dash Price
I found a Mod 66 No-dash, 4" barrel in Calif. Supposedly has not been fired, original box, all paperwork and made in 1974. How much do you think I should pay for this. These are harder to find in Calif because they are off roster and cannot be mailed.
Thanks.

How much is the asking price on the one you found?
That's a good place to start.

Im guessing its a 4" with SS rear site by the year 1974 .
In Free America that is a $650 to $750 package but people pay more or less ,
BTW my buddy works in a pawn shop that recently bought one as described for $500 then sold it for $1000 two days later.
The early SS rear site 67 and 66 in high condition are very good investments IMO.
Black rear site deduct $100, snub version add $150...all IMO.

It looks like it is the SS rear site. He was asking $1500 a couple of weeks ago, but has come down to $1000.

Not too far off.
You state seller is asking for $1000. I've seen at least two model 66's as you describe auction for about $1000 in the past month. Engine49guy gives upper range of $750. When's the next time you're going to see a 66 this nice? I'm from the Midwest area and my upper range might be $850 out the door. What does "off roster" mean? How hard is it to find S&W's of this vintage in California?

California has a roster of specific handguns that have been tested for calif. Only these guns can be bought new or mailed to someone in calif. Then it falls off the list because the gun company doesn't pay the yearly fees. Most older handguns are no longer on the list. So, because of this, older handguns are harder to find.

If it is truly NIB/unfired (since leaving the factory, they are all test-fired there), the price is at the upper end of current values. Add in the CA factor...if you don't intend to make a quick fortune on it, it is probably worth $1000.
Sincere condolences, from an ex-Californian .

I just bought a Model 28 five screw 4" barrel in San Diego for $800. I really want a Model 66 in either 2 1/2 or 4" barrel, but they are near impossible to find in California. California sucks; wish I still lived in Florida again.

Based on your explanation you are really limited on what you can get if you like older S&W's. I have to imagine there are innovative ways to legally get around that issue. Given your circumstances $1000 is not crazy-unreasonable for a NIB 66.
