My latest acquisition...just couldn't resist!
It's a great time of year...Tax refunds and S&W revolvers!
Don't have much of anything in the way of .22LR firearms but have thousands of rounds of ammo. There's only one way to solve that problem!
Local LGS just posted a Model 17-4 6"BBL with box and tools on their website. It was time to beat feet and see if I could corral this one.It apparently just came in the door.Checked it over and said "Wrap her up and get me out of here."
Serial number dates it to 1978 (early 1979 at worst).Turn line is pretty much nonexistent. Can't see any wear on it.If it was shot the previous owner didn't hit anything.Doing a DNA test for varmint blood right now.
It doesn't fit in the box.The label on the box matches the gun so I can only assume that maybe the grips were changed. The young kid at the store couldn't figure it out so I told him that with the warmer weather sometimes a gun will swell up and you have to refrigerate it for 30 minutes to shrink it down.
Anyway here it is...

Nice gun!! I believe that I read somewhere that if the metal corners on the box had 5 "loops" then it was a box for a gun with target grips. If it has 4 "loops" like yours, it was for magna style grips.

The "S" on the end label indicates "Service" stocks, and would have numbered to the gun.
Nice, nice, revolver! Enjoy!

As noted, it has incorrect stocks (which is why it won't fit into the box (freezing it - good grief!).
Stocks or no, this is an absolutely beautiful K-22. Congratulations!

Great purchase of a great S&W revolver and I have a 17-4 with 8 3/8 inch barrel that is my most accurate S&W revolver and it thinks it's a rifle.

I do like the grips that are on the gun but would like to see pics of what grips would've come on the gun if possible.
Might also be interested in buying the correct grips even though they wouldn't be original to my gun.I figure they might help if I were to sell down the road.

Pretty K22 coltle6920!! Congrats
I really wouldn't worry about the grips or the specs on the label. I am suspicious of the label as it has been put over the top of another label.

That's a beautiful revolver. I tend to agree with you that someone's changed out the stocks. Matter of fact, those look incredibly like the newly designed ones S&W is putting on its latest line of "Classic" revolvers.

The only thing I know about the grips is from the LGS listing. They are said to be "checkered Goncola Alves target grips".

I was able to pull back the label about a 1/3 from the top right corner and didn't see any writing underneath.I'm thinking that someone just screwed up a label and didn't want to trash the box.

Very nice gun. It probably came with magnas if that is he original box. No worries that is really irrelevant. That will be an awesome shooter and those target stocks with do more than just fine...enjoy.
