Earliest Model 58 Serial Number?
I am just curious to see what is the lowest serial number on a Members Model 58 is? I picked up a set of N Frame Diamond PC Magna's with serial number S256543.In the Standard Catalog of S&W it states they started in the S256500 range.

You should start looking for a set of PC stocks for yours! Looks like there are some available!
I'm guessing those don't number to the gun, do they?

The 58 is much easier to shoot with the standard Magnas than the PC's. The orignial owner told me that these had been on it since it was close to new.
They are unnumbered. This was a common modification on the 58's I have been told.
My nickle 58 came with targets from the factory.

My S prefix 58 is 257056 and has some goofy looking target grips.
Dad bought it new in December 1964.
One of my N prefix 58s has the stock modified magnas and the other has standard magnas.

The year was 1966.
My M58 serial # was S259996.
I foolishly traded it off for something better at the time.

I have S 257888, so first 12 months or so of production. I also have N 188057, which would have been one of the last of the 58's from ~1974. Neither came with the original PC Magnas, so both sport closely matched sets of Grashorn stags. Their original numbered grips must be out there somewhere, but at least the two look pretty darned good until I find them.

Mine is S257735, and I shoot the mess out of it on a regular basis.
I'm not real clear on when it was made, but I guess it would have been within the first year of 58 production. I'm open if anyone thinks they can maybe nail it down to a month and year based on letters of other 58s.

Guess this comes back every 4 years?
I have S259872 shipped April of 1968. Number would seem a couple years earlier but the 58 was a slow seller from the start and they often sat in inventory a long time.

I bought some a week ago off an auction site. They are supposed to be delivered today. The number on the grips is pretty close to the number on the gun which was shipped in April 1977. I was looking at both pairs that were available and bought the ones that appeared to be the closest to mine in number.

The earliest shipping date for a Model 58 I have in my notes is August 6, 1964. Serial number is S256119.

Guess I should have looked at the date of your previous post. And yes I did buy some grips to replace the non correct ones that came. With the gun

#259185 shipped March 1965. Don't have the original grips, don't want them.
