Hi all. I have a 36-3" barrel barely (previous owner conveyed unshot, but a swab revealed GSR, and even if it was not shot much it was rotated some) shot with box and papers revolver. S/n is floating J: 6J309X. What is the approximate year of manufacuture? I'm thinking '63. Bill

First, only a shipping date can be determined. S&W does not maintain records of "manufacture" dates.
Second, the floating J numbers were only used in 1971-72. Given that yours is quite low, I would suggest likely shipment in 1971.
In 1963, there was not yet a J prefix in the serial numbers. That did not start until 1969.
