These two guns show two different color grips.
The 67 had walnut checkers and is very light.
The 28 has what I think are rosewood checkered grips. Stamped on the inside of those grips is the letter 'R'. Could they be Rosewood. My pics were sized too big for this post.

The Highway Patrolman is likely wearing Goncalo Alves stocks. This wood technically is a type of rosewood and can in some cases resemble the more traditional dark reds, purples and browns we see in what is commonly known as rosewood.

The set of N frame checkered Rosewood Stocks I have are almost Black.It is VERY obvious that they are not Goncalo Alves or Walnut,They also have the long grain structure common in Rosewood.

This is a set of K-frame rosewood stocks that date to around 1967.

Here are some N frame targets in Rosewood on a 27-2:

As with any natural wood product, the appearance of rosewood varies greatly from block to block. I have a couple pair of rosewood stocks that I removed from the sealed S&W blister pack that look nothing at all like some other stocks made of rosewood. To me that is the beauty of wood. Just look at quarter sawn oak compared to the straight cut oak from the same tree.

You could resize your images in MSPaint - just go to Start/Run and enter mspaint...then drag/drop the image into the window, select Image/Resize-Skew and change the 100% to something like 60% on both height and width. Save the image and add an 's' to the filename for Small...then you won't lose your original image.

Look at the open grain structure of the above grips posted by civil1977. You should see the same pattern on yours if they are Rosewood. Sometimes easier to see on the inside of the grip panel. I doubt the R stamp has anything to do with the type of wood.

Sorry for the poor pic but I've been told the 29-2 on the top has Goncalo Alves, the 27-2 has rosewood and the 25-5 has walnut stocks. The 29 came with Pachmayrs the others came with what's pictured. Joe

I'd guess Goncalo Alves; as previously noted, it comes in dark, medium and light shades.

Funny....I sort of preferred several other woods until GA became rare and not available. Now, I treasure mine....
