Hi All. I saw a very nice model 48 on the table of a collector of S&W and Colt firearms at a recent local gun show. I've kind of been looking for one as I really like the extra oomph you get from the .22 Magnum. I currently own a couple S&W .22s that I really like and thought it would be nice to add the .22 mag.
The gun he has is a 6' model, is from the early 60s and in 95% if not better condition, as are all of his guns. He is asking $700 without box or anything else with it. Is that a fair price?
I always read here of folks finding .22s such as the fellow who got the model 63 for $300. I myself do not see guns in such good condition in that price range. If I did I'd be buying a lot more guns. I also often read that gun prices are inflated but I don't see it here and these older Smiths are not turning up every day in this good of condition. And a new model 48 sells for $899.00
I know it is not a steal but these rarely show up and he is willing to refund me if dissatisfied with the gun which is not the usual guarantee you get at a gun show.
I purchased a Model 34-1 in a 4' barrel a while back for $650 and again while not a steal did not feel like I was being cheated. It came with box and papers and is in beautiful condition.
As an aside, as an 18 year old with the help of my Dad (too young to buy on my own) I purchased my 17-4 in 8 3/8 barrel in 1979 in Erie, PA for $204.00 out the door. I see these at the gun shows regularly for $800-$1000. I wish my retirement investments were doing as well.
Thanks for any advice.
Dave
