Default Friends question about 3.5" 27-2

At the local emporium a friend who has sold me several nice guns asked me about the value of his 3.5" 27-2 that was about 85-90% (probably closer to 85%). Muzzle wear and high point cylinder wear with a good turn ring, but otherwise very tight. I told him about $700. Was I off or close? I well understand the difficulty of placing a value without having the gun in hand, or at least having a picture. I also know the popularity of these guns/barrel lengths these days. Thank you for any input.

800-1000 depending on true condition...Should set you straight...

Even bad conditioned ones sell for 700 pretty easily these days...

A face to face cash deal from a friend? I'd say you're very
close at $700 in the condition you describe. Typical responses
on here to questions of value tend to be very high. I guess
it's reassuring to owners to believe their guns are worth
big bucks and that they didn't overpay for them. Truth is
that selling price of a particular gun may vary considerably
depending on a variety of circumstances, too numerous to
go into here. I assume you're asking about a nice shooter
grade gun, not a safe queen with presentation case and
tools. Two years ago I didn't own a 3 1/2" mod 27. I now
have four of them, all bought on the net auction sites. One
is near mint and the other three are solid shooter grade,
varying a little bit. I only paid just a little over $700 for
one of the four and it's not the nice one. There are a few
decent buys to be had if you're patient.

While a nice collector grade gun is easily $800+, a shooter grade gun as you describe should be around $600 (fair cash money between friends). Shooter grade guns are commonly priced as collectors...and sometimes sold for top dollar to desperate or under-educated buyers.

I agree that there are a few decent deals if you are patient, BUT the gun market in general has exploded in the last 6-9 months. Might be a bubble, but probably not.

The 3.5 inch 27-2 is a very sought after revolver and usually sells for a premium and I think an 85% revolver is in the $600 to $650 price range. I say that because to me an 85% grade revolver shows a lot of wear and everyone's opinion on what an 85% revolver is different.

I don't visit the gun auction sites as often as I used to but I do cruse through them to try and have a feel for the market. I don't doubt there are any number of people who would be delighted to find an "tight" 3.5" M27-2 with 85% finish for $700. I question how many would sell their 85% 27 with a 3.5" barrel for $700.

I'd have to see it first. Collector's grading skills vary wildly!

The evaluation method I was taught was, if you imagine the gun in 2 dimensions and laid out flat, what percentage of the finish is left? Additional deductions for pitting, but that's about it. What most people guess as an 85% gun is usually higher, what most guess as a 98% gun is usually lower.

I'd think 700 would be fair. I'd buy it at 650, and pass at 800. Everything else is negotiable!
