Unhappy Were grips always numbered to the gun ?

I have a model 19 that I bought new in 1973 when I returned from active duty. I was the first owner of this gun and have the box and all it's paperwork. It was Purchased Brand NEW from a reputable gun shop in NJ.
Plus I know these were the grips that came with the gun. I removed the grips the other night to give the gun a through cleaning and noticed that the number on the original Magna stocks that came with the gun in no way resembles the serial number of the gun.
(I removed the grips prior to the time but was not aware that serial numbers were matched to the gun. Just something I never looked at)

My question is; The Model 19 serial number is 4K162X and the numbers on the stocks are 97202. Can any one help me make sense as to how that could happen ?
Thanks.....just trying to learn.

A number of possibilities exist. A mix-up at the factory prior to shipping, perhaps your gun shop swapped the stocks around, etc. Is it possible you accidentally put the wrong stocks on the gun years ago when you had them removed?

Need pics and more details,
If your 19-3 is a 4" or 6" SB someone swapped the OEM GA targets with the Magnas , If its a snub it came with RB Magnas but they should serial to your gun.

Look at the label on the end of the box. What is marked in the box that says stock? S or T

Most 4" guns I've seen usually wear target stocks, but came either way. I believe 6" guns generally wore targets from the factory.

If the box is marked T and your gun wears magnas, then your "reputable" gun shop swapped them out before you bought it. If it is marked S and your gun wears magnas, then who knows?

Target stocks were generally not marked with a serial number.

The correct stocks for your gun would be the ones with the football cutout

Thanks for the response guys. Ken, you did send me in the right direction. I checked the original box and it does say 'S' .
I recall I ordered a Target trigger and Target Hammer when I originally ordered the gun but thought I put my own special target stocks on - so did not specify the target stocks and that's the way it came through. (Now it makes no sense but back then it did)
Thanks for your help.

I think it's possible someone at the factory dropped the gun or somehow damaged the original stocks, then quickly threw on a set of extras from the left over bin. Way back when, most people didn't worry about the sorts of things we pay attention to today as collectors. Even people who worked at the factories where these items were made.

I'm sure this is old hat discussion among Smith owners by now, but as interchangeable as old K frame grips tend to be, I sort of wonder why they even bothered with grip numbers.

So you are saying you ordered it with Magna grips intending to use aftermarket target grips ?

S&W numbered Magna stocks to the gun until around 1975 so something still doesnt sound right.
Can you post pics of the grips showing both inside and out ?

If not what color is the metal washer inside black or SS ?

Ive asked dealers to swap grips on guns before buying them if not numbered. Some times they did and some times they declined.

I think you should just buy a nice set of football targets to put on it and be done with it!

Actually combat target grips look and feel the best but they are pricey.
