Default Price advice on a 10-5 Snubby

Local dealer just got in a Model 10-5 2" snubby (D-series, ca. 1974). It looks new, with box and paperwork. Only problem is a not-too-bad cylinder turn line. Now, I very seldom even look at any S&W younger than a pre-Model 10, so I don't follow pricing. Dealer will take $650 OTD, and he doesn't seem very negotiable beyond that. He started at $700 OTD.

Options question for all: should I (1) take it at that price?; or, (2) pass on it? (assuming he won't go any less).

Bought mine last December for $450...came with nice holster and cleaning kit.Don't see them around very often. If mine had cost $650 I probably still would've bought it without regrets but I'm not known to be the smartest rock in the pile.

I wouldn't pay $650 for the gun itself. I'm trying to convince myself that the condition plus box and the paperwork make the deal worthwhile, and I'm not sure they do. I have several other (but earlier) snubbies, and haven't paid nearly that much for any of them

I agree. My previous high ($475) was for a very nice pre-Model 10 snubby. As I said, I don't have much interest in any S&Ws made after 1956. Upon reflection, I don't believe today's gun/box/papers is much of a deal for $650. I may make a try for $550 and walk away if he won't take it.

If you plan on shooting it. Walk away. If you are going to store it in safe, it's prob a good investment with all the goodies. You can always buy a shooter for less.

Then I would pass at that price. I think they should be shot too. At least a couple times.

When was the last time that they made a 2" Model 10? You might have paid $300 for a pre-Model 10, but not recently. I paid $165 for a Model 1917 in great shape in 1985, but they are $650+ now, IF you can find one. And you are looking at a gun in great shape with box & docs! You might be paying a premium, but it is the time-portal premium.

Like many others here have said, a year or two down the line you won’t regret spending the extra few dollars for such a beautiful old gun.

Buy it and shoot it.

Frank

I got my two inch SB 10-4 for $435 about two weeks ago so it seems high to me.

If you feel ok about it, go for it. Don't worry about the turn line. Any gun that's used at all is going to have a turn line. That wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

The $650.00 price does sound a little high, even to me here in high priced CT. I bought a model 10-5 snub, S/N C6852XX (1964) from the LGS in January 2014 for $469.00. It's beautiful to me; not a mark on it except for the turn line, stocks are numbered to the gun and it came with a nice leather gun rug.

On the other hand, I've overpaid for quite a few of my guns over the years. I paid $89.00 for a really nice used model 18-2, that was probably only worth $60.00 (in 1972). I'm hoping that it'll be worth more as time goes by.

It's only money and you can't take it with you when you go.

George

I picked up a 10-5 2 inch S/N D587xxx about 2 month ago, no box or docs. Has a light turn line but the rest of the gun is nice. OTD for 450.00. It was my first snub.

The folks who say 'pay the higher price because down the road it'll cost more and you're gonna wish...' are not wrong. The price is wrong. It's the most common S&W out there. There's too much price gouging because 'they're not made any more.' I see private sellers do it at every gun show

Years ago, I saw a beat-up 94 Winchester at a jewelry-store price. I questioned his price. He replied, "It's a pre-'64." Yes, but it looked like it'd been tossed around in a cement mixer...

Nobody is wrong here re this pricing, but I'm not paying that amount for a plain vanilla gun. It's only a gun. I'd offer $500. If the seller starts about the box, I'd come back with $400, keep the box. The economy is not that good that people can be inflexible about a ridiculous figure. I refuse to haggle when the starting price is insane, I walk away.

Remember he only paid $50 or $100 for the gun from "someone who kept the gun in the box in a drawer and never fired it." Someone who jumped at the $50 to $100 offer because they didn't know better. Yeah, I'm jaded.

Thanks for the comments. I'm going to pass on it if the dealer won't go $550 OTD. That's my choking point.

I don't know about prices in Texas, but in SoCal $650 isn't too out-of-line, AND you are getting box & docs. I think that deal might be $750-$800 here.

Location, location, location.

Hi Frank. Like I said above, nobody is wrong. I'm not surprised prices in CA are high with restrictions that are hard to comprehend. You are correct about 'location.' The Vegas valley, as I posted elsewhere, is the elephant graveyard of overpriced guns. Private sellers pushing pre-owned Glock 19s, for example, at $700 when they're $500 new... I walk away from a lot of guns at shows.

I can pay anything for a gun, but I won't let myself be gouged.

Stay safe partner!

From your description I'd say it's about $200 too high.
