Grip Help J frame Square Butt
Purchased a really nice early (77-78) S&W model 63 4 inch. Need larger grips. Dislike the standard J frame Square butt grips.
Did S&W ever make larger target grips or presentation grips. Since newer guns are all Round Butt harder to find anything current except for Hogue. Saw some J Scott grips that might fit.
I am not opposed to rubber, Saw a set of Pachmars that might work. Are the Hogue wood grips really large for a J Frame?
Opinions?
I bought this gun to shoot... even though it is new in box. I just don't care for the 617. Full lug on a 22lr revolver is way overkill for me. I will also want to use it to teach a couple newbies also.
Thanks in advance
Mike C

This is a factory target grip for square J-frames.

Hogues are somewhat disproportionate to the size of a J-frame. If you wanted something in wood and money/time were no object, I highly recommend a set of Herrett's "Detective" stocks.

Thanks for the Input
Appreciate the posts and pics Love the Factory Target Stocks. I have them on my 686 no dash (checkered). Hope to find a set someday for J frame. In the mean time I will pick up a set of the Shooting Star, a member has some for sale.
Custom grips from KB is an option. He is based only 10 miles from me. Would rather try something less expensive to start with.
Regards,
Mike C

You may want to consider Altamont Grips. They have round, and square butt, in many configurations. I bought a N-Frame set that is nice and a decent price. Bob

If you can find 'em, S&W once made square butt combat grips for J-frames; most comfortable grip I've ever found.
Not my pic, but here goes:
They pop up sometimes in the classifieds here, or eBay.

Square Butt J Frame Grips
Mike,
A little comparison of wood grips for the small frame revolver.
The grips that are on this Pistol are a set of Thai manufactured grips from Ebay. I think they are bamboo. Work good, feel good, and are a good gold color and wood figure. Good Luck in your search!

J Target Grips
Blackrifle, you will be pleased to know that the factory "J" target grips that Jaymo pictured will fit either the round or square butt frame and were produced with and without checkering, they are usually available from vendors set up at the Gun Shows in this general area.

Thanks OldTimer. I belong to Ohio Gun Collectors.and will be paying close attention at the next meeting/Show. I was too busy looking for a Model 63 during the last meeting and I still went home empty handed.
Appreciate all the response from your folks. This is truly the best forum.

Mike C,
I've got a lot of grips for my guns. I hate to see rubber grips on a nice blue S&W, so for my square butt J frame M36 snub, I have the original magnas, a pair of Altamonts, a pair of factory targets and a pair of Thai grips. They're all okay, but the grips that feel best are a pair of Pachmayr "Grippers" with the finger grooves.
The beautiful magnas or Altamonts are installed for pictures.

I have a model 63 and I love it. It is handy with snakeshot cartridges, and with 22lr lead bullets, for everything around here. I even killed a mole that was tearing our yard up with it. I have a model 622 that I like as well. I have smaller hands, I have Pachmayrs on my 63.
