66-1 Pawnshop Rescue- Updated with somewhat cleaner gun
I picked this up at a local shop today. 1979ish, lots of handling marks, and non factory grips. The sideplate doesnt match up quite right, the screws are a little buggered, and t girls ere is a little end play in the cylinder, which has been milled for moon clips. But, the action is buttery smooth, and after all it's a 66!
If anyone has an idea who made the grips let me know. I really like them!

As you well know the cosmetics can be easily fixed. I have never seen anything like those grips. Congratulations on your new Smith! (I know, a lot of help right? ) Bob

Those grips look to be Fuzzy Farrant's work. If that is the case, they are fairly valuable and desired by collectors!

I think the most interesting aspect is the moonclip conversion. I have considered converting one of my revolvers to accept these, but I'm a big chicken. You'll have to run it with the clips at the range and tell us how you like it.

I'm anxious to get out and shoot it....it seems that using moon clips might also make 9mm a viable option in this one.

They're nice grips for sure. Are Farrants marked inside? Any idea of the value (maybe I should post a thread on them)?

Those Stocks never actually sell for that price.A nice set of K Frame Farrants are worth about $250-$350.

Some of those ads with the BuyItNow price are seriously deluded....They are nice, but not that nice.....I would say between $200-350 would be the top of the market around here....If you don't like their shape or texture, you can always send them to me
Good luck with your new shooter!

Ron, from the condition and marking on the left side of the frame, I'm assuming it's a retired working gun? A little time with a lead-A-Way cloth followed by some gentle rubbing with Mothers Mag Polish should have that guy looking like new.
P.s. I really hate the fact that you found that and I didn't

Nice catch.
I's say to hang on to those stocks and see how you shoot with them.
Meanwhile, get to polishing!

It's stamped SRPD, and I have no idea where it would have come from. It's been shot a bit, but overall its a nice serviceable gun! I gave 450 OTD, maybe a little high but I really like the gun.

Soon......very very soon!
BTW, I may end up selling the Farrants. They are the style that does not require the frame be modified. I have a couple sets of Kframe grips at the house that will work quite nicely. Besides, I kinda like stock grips on Kframes.

$450 OTD is too much! You can easily get half that for the Stocks.A nice 66-1 for $225....If thats too much I need to start shopping where you are.

A little bit of cleaning and a change of grips
I still have work to do, the repacement side plate came with a high polish and I haven't figured out the best approach to getting it blended. I also put a set of buffalo horn magnas on it. Whaddaya think? I'm open to suggestions on next steps....btw, the Farrents went to my Cousin Ken in California....Thanks buddy!

The sideplate looks like it is nickel plated, as it was originally from a model 19. Perhaps it is just how the computer displays it.

Congrats on your 66-1. I picked up mine last week at my LGS. Excellent condition and very accurate. These and the M19's are beautifully proportioned IMO. My first SS gun and my second S&W. This will be a good gun for my wife and daughters to shoot at the range. Very mild recoil, excellent sights and trigger.

It is stainless, but it looks like it was highly polished. I am hoping to be able to match it better. If not, well, theres always the original. Its so scratched up I kinda hate to go back to it.

Definitely one of the LAPD gents; Fuzzy Farrant, John Hurst, Walter Stark or Guy Hogue. Seeing in person would confirm by looking at the checkering.

Good job...I snagged this off a table a few weeks ago for a song.
66 no dash ..slick as can be.
Some sort of agency gun no-one as figured out yet.
Carried very little. You have a nice 66.
One of the best all around Smith's out there.

It seems like retired PD revolvers are the bargains in the S&W world any more. I get the fact they may not be pretty, but most weren't shot much.
