Default Model 14-2 Price check

I have a chance to buy a 14-2. 6" Its from 1966 and has diamond targets.. No box.

It looks good to me but these pics came out terrible. The finish i sway nicer than the pics and finger prints.
There is a very slight muzzle wear and 2 very small, very light scratches on frame.

The finish is a high polish blue you would see in early Mid 1960s- 1970s guns. I don't thinks its refinished. But will pull grips at lunchtime. Thats when I tell him if i will take it. It is put away for me until lunch tomorrow. The right diamond has positive relief. The left is almost flush..maybe 2 different grips or was stored that way?

The seller is set on $550 OTD.
Your thoughts? I wish I had better pics.

mbliss57 - probably not a terrible price and will make a great shooter.
DID YOU NOTICE that the top of the left panel - the football relief is bubba-modified? Those grips were nice at one time but no value in them now.

Yes and no.. I knew something wasn't right with the stocks but I couldn't quite get it. The left panel has the diamond sanded flush too.. I noticed that 1st. I don't (we never know if targets are original) but to your point these are worthless instead of worth $100+. (And also why I put guns up here before buying...so you all can catch that stuff) I do have a nice set of K frame diamond targets that would go nice... but maybe not worth the price.

It appears the bottom side plate screw, behind the trigger, is a flush screw head and should be rounded like the one below the cylinder. Could be the angle of the picture? I bet she is a good shooter.

Regards

An OK price I think right now.
I sold one for about $200 less two years ago, but prices have gone up.
Grips mean nothing to me, they can be replaced as can screws.
Check the bore and chambers and action.
That's what is important.

Thanks for the help. I will probably pass. If I want just a shooter I don't need to pay that much...don't get me wrong I would shoot this.. but there enough little things already mentioned to not justify that price.

If you really wanted a shooter K-38, that would not really be a bad deal. But I think you can do better for the money. The dash 2 isn't quite as common on the market as the 14-3 in my experience, so you can keep your eye open for one of those.
But this is an example of the way prices are going. I paid about the same amount (including shipping) for the dash 2 shown below, less than 3 years ago. At the time it was about the going rate with the box and accessories.

Around here S&W K frames 38 Special are not all that popular when compared to 357 magnum K frames and the usually can be found with a 6 inch barrel for around $450. Adding the correct box, tools, & paperwork adds about $75 to $100 to the deal.

I'm not in the buying mode these days and I have passed on two nearly mint Model 14-3's for $400 to $450 in the past 6 months.

I bought that one from the Master Chief, and have enjoyed it no small amount. I suspect that in the new world, the price for a shooter is about what the writer was asked for. You might be able to negotiate down.

Man I wish I could find a model 14 under $550 like you guys are. Here in Charlotte the only shops that have them are asking almost $700 and they’ve got heavy wear. Just to give you a better picture, I listed a 6 inch GP100 for trade on Armslist a week ago. Someone contacted me with a 14-4 (no box and no original grips). They were offering to trade but also wanted $150 cash on top of it. Gunbroker prices are up there too. Since when does a 38 Spl demand more $ than a 357 Mag?

I suspect it varies by the model. A K38 is just such a great shooter that I would likely value it above most .357s, too, unless I was looking for a pure working gun with the flexibility run both rounds.

Yeah.. I did some GB research and was very surprised how LNIB model 14 brings compared to say a model 19. They have gone through the roof. These have stayed more reasonable. I passed on that gun today. Based on what I saw on here and GB that was about a $400-$450 gun. Thanks for the help.

I'd be interested at $400 and would have no hesitation in passing at $550. To me, the modified grips are a non-starter.

Dwalt...that was my 1st turn off. So I was looking at it from:...I have to put a set of nice diamond targets or magnas on it..so that dropped it's value by $100 immediately. Then looking at GB prices and the forum prices and comments..I don't think it was worth any more than $400. Maybe $450 if it had the box etc but it doesn't.
The tag at the LGS had model 14-2 .38spl on one side and 14-2 357 mag on the other. I wonder if the person who took it in thought it was a 357 mag and priced accordingly... just a thought as they are usually pretty right on their prices. Although they have a Victory Model there going on 2 years at $600. With no price decrease. Whatever, I am moving on to the next chase.
