66 No Dash "R" on rear Face of Cylinder
It's pretty obvious what this is but because I have not seen it before I thought I would seek out a professional opinion. The rear face of the cylinder of this early 4" M-66 (stainless rear sight) has an R with the ping next to it. Was this regularly done on this model? I got the gun (SN: 4K646xx) from a retired Atlanta LE friend, and I am not implying it was a LE gun, but these things seem to be passed around a lot within the community.
Any thoughts on how common this was?

I just found some pictures of that R on my computer, so it is possible I have asked the question before. I apologize if I doubled up on this issue.

Seen quite a few marked with L for the threads way back when, but never the newer R. Maybe the cylinder was returned??

I thought it was a rockwell hardness ping. Just a guess on my part. I just haven't seen one there before. Not a very good picture.

I have the V as well. They must have done a Rockwell test on the cylinder for some reason.

I have a marked police model 10-5 and below the SCPD it has an R with a period. I was told this meant it had been "retired". The card from the Armory is also marked "Retired". But this is on the lower grip.

That actually makes sense to me. I got it from Don. If you have spent any time around the gun shows in Atlanta you know who I'm talking about.
