Help on a Model 10-5 decision
hey guys I'm being offered the chance to buy a Smith Model 10-5. Can anyone date it for me? Serial Number is D32XXXX. He want's $350 for it. What do you think? I'd love to have it but honestly don't know much about them or if that is a fair price. Oh also is it safe to fire +P ammo? Thank you.

If it's in good condition, that seems like a decent price to me. I bought a 10-5 snubby like that at a pawnshop for $400.

If you want a 2" K frame, that is clearly a good price. The Model 10 is a classic, the 10-5 is probably the best of them (although some prefer the heavy barrel of the contemporaneous 10-6), and 2" barrels are probably at a slight premium over the more common 4". Even if you later end up buying something smaller for backup or pocket carry, don't get rid of the Model 10, even though people will be offering you more than you paid for it.
IMO, it's a keeper.

Hello VV83, buy it and shoot the poop out of it. I have one sitting right next to me on the couch, loaded with +P. Best to you, Mike

Serial Number is D32XXXX = 1970
:inspect the revolver .....bore (pitting, worn-out rifling, bulges )...lock up/end shake...timing...forcing cone.....extractor rod (straight; cylinder spins true when open)... firing pin (sharp, broken)...hammer push off...any rust and/or pitting on frame, bore, cylinder, under the grips...any frame damage.
if all of this checks out ok..............$350 is a very good price.

Agreed; $350 is a very fair price for a Model 10. If it checks out mechanically, buy it ! It will provide a lifetime of .38 Special shootin', and will accept any and all factory .38 Special ammo without complaint.

I would jump at that price. Have a few model 10 snubbies and they fun are to shoot. New shooters seem to enjoy them too

In the world of Model 10s and pre-Model 10s, snubbies are the most desirable, and $350 is about $150 cheaper than the last one like it (D-series Model 10 in similar condition) I saw locally.
Everyone just HAS to ask the +P question, I guess. If you had to, you could probably shoot .357 Mag in it safely if it would fit in the chamber. But there's very little purpose in using anything other than lead bullet standard velocity ammo.

This one is D3231XX, about same condition as one you're looking at. I've had it 10 years. Traded a FEG R9 (not a Browning Hi-Power copy except for using same mags) that I got 6 mos before from the German guy who brought them to gunshows in large wooden transit chests. Trading a junk gun for it is great but trading $ 350 (about 4 fill ups in my truck) for it is outstanding. The gas will be gone in a month, the gun will be around after you're gone. Get it. (mandatory crummy cell phone pic). Joe

Around here, that gun would be $ 475 easily.

My 10-5 is my "truck gun". I keep it in the console of my Jeep. It's the perfect size. More substantial than my LCR or J-frame, but still compact because of the short barrel.
I added the aftermarket grips because mine came with really ****** fake stag grips.

$350 is a pretty good person to person price. I picked one up from a pawn shop a couple of years ago for $400. I just got it back from my gun smith. He slicked up the action a little and I just added a set of Badger boot grips. Carrying it this week.
