The Standard Catalog has no mention of a variation like that (didn't expect it to), but I think it looks pretty good. I certainly wouldn't call it whatever you called it that the auto-censor made into asterisks. It does beg the question as to why someone would change the barrel, though. How much high does it shoot; can you set the rear sight as low as possible and adopt a different sight picture to compensate for it, like a low 6 o'clock hold vs. a "sunrise" hold?
My M58 is the only fixed sight S&W that I have, and I couldn't clearly see the front post in the rear notch (getting old and bifocals). I painted the edge of the rib bright red, similar to the insert available on the Baughman front sights, and painted the back of the notch white. Allows me to better see the sight picture; I know that won't help you with your short post issue, but adapting to what you have will still work.
Maybe the previous owner had a 6" barrel M57, wanted a 4", but could only find the M58 barrel; didn't realize the sight height difference until too late.
Another thought; since you found a M57 with a M58 barrel, it stands to reason there might be a M58 somewhere out there with a M57 barrel. A true Holy Grail quest.
My pair, 1967 and 1968 S prefixes, the M58 was ANIB when I bought it.

The gun shoots more than 10“ high at 15 yards and more than 1 yard at 25 yards. The rear sight is screwed down as much as possible, so i guess that the current sight combo will never work at all. As I wrote, I don’t think that the barrel was changed because of the new, untouched looking barrel pin.
@ Hair Trigger: what a beauty the Model 57 you own, nice gun.

Karl,
By the way the frame looks, it appears that a model 58 barrel was swapped onto a model 57 frame. It looks neat, but likely was not a factory offering. A historical letter would tell for sure.

Hello karl...
As said, no tellin' but probably someone screwed a 58 barrel onto a 57 frame for some reason... A good gunsmith would be able to fix your front sight problem. Pop out the pin holding in the front sight and then make a new sight blade of the correct height... Not easy but a good smith can do it. I've seen some 58s converted to .45 Colt that had a custom front sight blade becasue the Colt uses a heavier slower bullet and will usually shoot higher than a .41...

Thanks Bob.
You are correct about the Bisley Flat Top, I then made a Super Blackhawk out of the donor Bisley, 3rd from the right top row.

Had a gunsmith friend of mine back in the early 90s that we swapped frames. He wanted a fix sighted .44 Mag and had a 4" M29. I had a second 4" M58. He filed down a the front sight of that 4" M29 barrel and built up a front sight on my 4" M58 barrel.
Henry is still listing 4 models of .41 Mag rifles and Charter Arms still lists their .41 Mag Pug

All I can say is that an awful lot of folks take first rate care of their guns and that is a tribute to the caliber in it's own rite.

The .41 magnum is an excellent revolver cartridge. I've owned several, including 57s and old model Ruger Blackhawks. I trimmed down my collection of shooters to simplify reloading, component inventory, and bullet casting chores and the .41 and .45 Colt were casualties of the process - but if I were starting from scratch and know what I know now, I would seriously consider the .41 as my primary magnum revolver cartridge. Some beautiful guns pictured here, guys!

Yikes $2K! I've been thinking of downsizing, maybe now is the time to move some of my collection.

So here is my solution so it shoots now as it should. And it looks like original.

They have a manufacturing and service facility in Bainbridge, GA now so I believe they no longer have to send stuff back to Brazil. Their Heritage line of products are made and serviced in Florida.

I make it by myself. On my working place I have access to spark erosion and milling machines. Thats why i make one in spare. I designed it just for gluing to the existing front sight.

So does anyone have anything new in the world of .41s? I was on vacation in the NW for two months and just got back a couple of weeks ago...
In looking at the auction sites, the 4" 57s and 657s sell a lot faster and for more money than the longer length barrels...it is too bad that since S&W has been making the "Classic" with a 6" barrel for several years that could drop the 6" barrel for a couple of years and make it in a 4"...my bet weould be it would be a better seller...or better a 4" STAINLESS...what is wrong with these people???
Just my morning rant...Bob

There is a 4" 657 (discontined in 1988) as well as the Mountain Gun version (introduced in 1998). Also a 4" unfluted version (103950), which I've never actually seen, and a 4" 657-2 Classic series, according to SWSC 4th.

I have a model 57-2, great shooting gun! Does anyone have a line on original front sight blades? Mine was "messed" up by previous owner and I have been searching ever since I got the gun.

Almost 20 years ago I was a Gun Library Mgr at Cabela's. I bought a collection of S&W guns and in that collection was a M57 4 inch 41. I could have bought it but I had a M29 at the time and didn't see the need. I loved the feel of that 41 however and by the time I made up my mind it was sold.
I recently bought a M57 no dash 4 inch nickel and have been enjoying that gun. I have M19's in blue and nickel and when I saw another no dash blue M57 on another forum I snatched it up. I was thinking of pairs of revolvers in blued/nickel. This gun had Pachmayer grips which I just don't care for. I lucked into a set of grips from Ken Driskill which I thought would look great on it. The grips hadn't arrived when the county sheriff called asking about this gun. To make a long story short this gun was stolen from Tacoma Washington over 30 years ago! I had to surrender the gun and am out the purchase price. I'm going to try to get it back but as it was stolen in Washington, sold from a gentleman in Idaho and I live in Michigan it's doubtful.
To ease the pain I have a 6 inch M57 that should be here today but I'm going to continue the search for a blued 4 inch.

The front blade, whether it is a Baughman ramp or a Patridge, is pinned and replaceable, and is the same for all adjustable sight N frames.

The 6 incher is a nice gun. I put the set of grips on it that came from Ken. I took it north over the weekend but miserable weather prevented me from shooting it. That will get done this week. I really like the 4 inch vs the 6 inch and saw a nice one on GB before I left for the weekend. Funds for that gun will go out today

Sometime in 1980 S&W went from the pinned in blade front sight to an all milled unit...have no clue what they were thinking as if someone crashed the front blade the whole barrel would have to be replaced or the blade would have to be milled off and the base milled&drilled to take a new blade.
I had three 1980 vintage 57s at one time. The blue one I still have has a pinned front sight blade. A later blue and a Class A engraved nickel do not. Not sure if or when they went back to a pinned in front blade before the 57 was discontinued.
Gunsquirrel...if you look under the front sight blade on the side of the ramp you will see (or not see) a round pin polished flush...does your gun have one?

While in Idaho in May was able to visit the Herrett's Stocks factory with friend Mackay Sagebrush. Picked out four walnut blank sets and had them copy a set of Detective grips that came on a used 57 I had purchased many years ago... Those grips fit my hand better than anything else and don't move when shooting DA...
They were scheduled to arrive in August and did so...
Here is a link to some pics that were also included in a thread here on Herrett's grips...
Herretts Stocks on S&W N-frames - 24hourcampfire
Took the 58 out twice this week and tried several different loads... Grips are just perfect...

Good to know, my newest N frame (a M29-2) is a 1979 and it has a pinned front blade, my newest K frame is a 1981 and it is also a pinned blade (Patridge in this case). Anything newer than 1981 I don't care about. My M57 is a 1968.

...I'm sure some BeanCounter figured out they could save $2.51 by machining the whole barrel and sight as one unit instead of having separate blades and having to mill and drill the front sight base... Apparently whoever approved the change didn't care or didn't realize the "unintended consequences" of that savings...

Thats a target rich environment. I'm headed to Texas on the 28th for a deer hunt, unfortunately they don't have any pigs. I am on my way to the range today to punch some paper with the M57, 29, and a pre m14. Just not the same as makin bacon

41 Magnum
Great thread for some great 41 Magnums. I love all the great photos.
I used the Model 58 on the PD for several years. I switched over to the 41 caliber after finding the 357 Magnum wanting while on the two way range. I wasn't a fan of the original 210 grain police loads, but when we adopted the 170 grain Winchester Silver Tip bullet around 1983 it really came into its own as a belt gun for uniform carry.
I still have my Model 58 as well as a Model 57. Both shoot tighter than I can hold with my 210 grain RCBS cast SWCs over 8 grains of Unique powder.

With those two...you don't need much else...
8.0 grains of Unique will run right at 950 from the 58...same as the original 210 LSWC POLICE loadings from Winchester and Remington.
9.0 runs 1100 fps with a 210-220 grain bullet and makes a big difference, Have been using a MP mold that throws a 213 grain Keith HP that REALLY opens up at 1100 fps. GT Bullets has a lot of HPs for the .41 as it is the owners favorite caliber...

657-3 Magnum Hunter PC. Not a beauty, but rare. I read something about 500 pcs were produced in 1995. RSR serial number and in Europe, because of the uncommon caliber very cheap. I paid only 800* thats why I could not resist buying it;-)

I came to the .41 mag game a bit late. It was 1981 and a fella i knew who had been stationed in Alaska (Tok Junction Loran) sold me his .41 Mag Ruger Blackhawk. He sold it to me for what he paid for it. $110.00 and it came with a half box of shells.
A few years later when i was stationed back in CA, a fella i knew who owned a pawn shop found a .41 Mag Marlin (NIB) 1894 Carbine for me. It was added to the stable too.
Time passed and i was visiting my brother up near Seattle, Washington and he told me about a S&W .41 Mag, like new, no box or tools but good condition for $400.00. He wanted to know if i wanted it? I told him not to let the sun set on the day without buying it. It is a S prefix P&R 4". He didn't tell me it was in like new condition, but then i don't think he knew that.
I sold the Ruger to a local friend and added to Mod 57 to the stable. I'm a big fan of 6" bbls for hunting so that was the only modification until recently when i added some Pach's to soften the recoil. I kept the 4" bbl and the org. stocks for that day when i sell it off for retirement money. Maybe that'l be about 2055 or so, since i plan to live to be 125 and die by being shot by a jealous husband.
I also have a Taurus S/S snubby for those times when the big 6" is just to much to carry around. It's about like trading a 30 pound weight for 25 pounds, but it is lighter. And it carries in a shoulder holster so i don't ever feel under-gunned.

Hope all of you in .41 Land are doing well and buying up more guns...
Thought I was about done with new .41s but then one came up that caught my eye on GunBroker a couple of weeks ago..
Was advertised as a 1965 57 6" blue with the presentation case and screw driver. Pictures showed quite a bit of holster wear but zero rust or pitting. What was really stunning were the grips...it had the original Cokes and the grip wear didn't match the blue wear...they looked like they had just come out of the factory. The case had been relined in velvet. Starting price...$1195. Have seen the same gun in excellent condition with the original grips and PC sell for $2k+ wherever they come up for sale... I bid...no one else did.
Came home a couple of days ago...honest blue wear but except for a tiny ding on the heal of the right grip panel the Cokes were flawless. Not much of a turn line, nothing above the flashgap, face of the cylinder clean enough to eat off of and no wear marks on the recoil shield...I'd be surprised if it had more than a box of shells through it.
Cylinder opened smooth as butter but didn't spin free at all... Action was smooth... Pulled the whole gun down. Oil was congealed in both the action and crane... Cleaned it all up, polished the rebound slide, put in a 13# rebound spring, put a little lube on everything and buttoned it back up...and it is smooth as butter...warm butter.
Contacted the Seller who was a gun dealer about 75 miles north of me. Asked him what he knew about the gun...nothing...another dealer had asked him to sell a couple of guns for him and he did. Asked if he could find out anything about the gun as the wear didn't match between the grips and the gun... A day later he writes back that the other dealer said he had taken it in from an old Maine bear guide...it was his guiding/backup gun. The reason the grips looked so good is that after he bought the gun he, like most of us, didn't like shooting the gun with the wooden grips on it and it had "rubber" grips on it all these years. Pure luck he still had them and put them back on to sell the gun...
Will make fine "shooter"...Bob

Are you sure the presentation case isn't original? The first year or two they came with a velour lining. I'm not sure that it is one of the originals but think it may well be. If so, those are almost impossible to find. There was a recent post that included a picture of one, I'll try to find it.
Nice buy.

Here's a picture of a case for a first year 57. Looks a lot like yours.

My first one was a blued 6 inch M57 in 1975. It was followed by a 6 inch nickel, a 4 inch blued and a 6 inch nickel. All of them were in the wood box. Also had both barrel lengths of the 41 Mag Blackhawk.
The "Dirty Harry" craze was still on and the M29 was still super expensive. The M57 was cheap in comparison. Sad to say, they are all gone.

Thank you...I had totally forgotten about that... I'm used to seeing the frocked cases that deteriorate over time and thought it had been relined...
