Ah yes, the .41 magnum. Filling a need that didn't exist. If you got'em, enjoy them. Just my two cents.

I have two .41 Magnums, a 6" nickel N frame bought in 1979 second-hand. It is pinned and recessed so I think in was fairly new. I bought a New Model Ruger Blackhawk 6 1/2", sold it when money was short and finally got a second one of the pre-transfer bar variety. I wanted a second blued 6" M57, bought one "too cheap", it was pitted and worth less than what I paid for it, long after the satisfaction of the price the appearance gave me pain. It went away. A 10mm auto 6 inch, M610?, may just be needed to round out my 40 caliber revolver collection. The nickel 6" M57 got my first handgun whitetail and still has a place of honor in my hunting memories / N frame collection. If I had owned this one first maybe there wouldn't be so many 357 Mag, 45 ACP/45AR, 44 Spl, 44 Mag, 45 Colts rubbing elbow around the place. Nah, never enough good guns.

That seems like a pretty late number for the coke bottle stocks, but someone like Bill (Doc44) could give you much better information than I can. It's entirely possible the stocks are original to the gun but my experience says not. In any case, if you like the feel of them as much as I do, you are lucky to have them!

Actually, much like the 10mm, it was an attempt at filling a need for LE, but then you probably know that. Not successful due the "Magnum Fever" and a lack of understanding of the application for the round by ammunition manufacturers. And, as a hunting handgun, it is much more controllable with about the same effective power as a .44. It went into production before hotrodding the .45 Colt became real popular.

Put a 210 grain hardcast Keith bullet flying 1000-1100 fps in it and you can take any animal on the continent with it. Pretty much any car as well. Put in a softish hollow point running 850-900 fps and you have a great SD round. What's not to like?

A question for you guys that are more up on the Model 57's. I have a 4 inch 57 no dash with an N prefix serial number but it's not P&R. What's up with that? I can post a picture later.

Here are a couple of pictures of my 57. Any thoughts on the no dash designation? It does have recessed chambers. It's just not pinned. It must be a transitional gun.

Ah yes, a useless comment that's immaterial to the thread at hand.

We've got'em, and we ARE enjoying them, but I guess all the photo laden post previous to yours, escaped your grasp.

Just my two cents.... and here's my .41 Mags.

I have a 57 no dash 4" that I haven't shot yet, wanting to get into the .41 mag. Has anyone had any experience with ammo from laxammo.com? I'm thinking of getting the 250 rd 210 grain ammo. I'm trying to get some brass on hand to start reloading.

Scotter260...The previous owner did have good taste. A Model 57 with a serial number in S317000 range would have shipped in mid-1969 and been fitted with target stocks (no diamonds) made of Goncalo alves.

Summer of 84' I (just turned 19 yo) went to visit my uncle in Pittsburgh PA as I was recovering from a broken leg (parachute injury) and he taught me how to reload and shoot his M57 8.375" revolver. That begin two love affairs that continue today, Smith N frames .41s and reloading. Couple months later when I gradulated the SFQC I bought a M57 6" and a Lee handloader in .41 Mag. I would tap rounds out in the barracks in the evening, Win cases, 2400, 210 gr LSWC.

Since then have owned the above M57, M58s and M657 6" and a 657 Classic Hunter from Smith, TC Contender 14", Marlin 1894S and a Blackhawk 6.5" Got three molds I cast for Lee 195gr SWC, SAECO 200gr TC and Ranch Dog TL 411-255-RF. Those RDs weigh close to 270gr straight wheelweights and is what my M58 was loaded with in Alaska. Took the 6" M57 to Germany for several years and used to shoot ISPC revolver class with a 6" M657.

Ranch Dogs 255 and Lee 195 SWC

I haven't bought any .41 factory since the early 90s but have seen it on the shelves during the ammo crunch last year across the US when every other bigbore was gone.

1968 vintage 57 S315xxx. Came from a pawn shop with K frame target stocks crammed on it. You could still see the dried oil line on the sides of the frame from the original target stocks. It was cheap, and the stocks from J. Culina look good on it.

Nickel 6 inch from 1979.

Two tone from 1977, not sure of its pedigree but I think it's pretty.

I just got around to trying out the Ranch Dog 255RF bullets I cast a few years ago. With my alloy they weigh in at 263 grains and 14.3 BHN.

This is the first cast bullet I've gotten any degree of accuracy with in my Marlin 41 Magnums.

Well...I have brought more joy to some shooters along the way... Iggy and I were hoping to meet but I was a week earlier than planned to his area and we just couldn't meet. So I contacted a member of another forum and ended up invited to a 22K acre ranch for a couple of days of shooting and 4-wheeling. He also loved the FA 654 .41 Magnum but actually shot a 5" 57 the best....

..and with the "pets"....

I'm now in the Twin Falls, Idaho area for a few days before heading to north central Idaho for some more fishing and shooting...

SO LETS SEE SOME MORE .41s!!!!!

I've showed this before, but what the heck. I picked up this 57 back a couple of Christmas' ago in a package deal with a 29-2.

I have all the stuff to reload for it now except for some powder which I hope to be able to pick some up this month. I believe it was unfired except the factory test loads when I bought it.

I think so highly of my circa 1969, S series , model 58 that I use it for my avatar. It has some custom Ahrend's grips on it in the photo but the original factory grips are put away for safe keeping.

I fixed appliances for a GE servicer late 70s. One of my customers was a Gambles dealer that sold guns. I watched a 57 in walnut case slowly drop in price in his case and finally got the money for a down payment on layaway. I got to Ron's store only to see it gone as he sold it the night before and broke my heart as I'd read about them and wanted it bad.
Fast forward to 2003 and I found the same model gun unfired but with the gold filling they sometimes did years ago. I bought it for my 50th birthday and had soon fired it. Later bought an S serial with some holster wear and then a Ruger Bisley in .41 mag. Then new and old model Blackhawks and finally a Taurus snub.
Still haven't found a 58 but on my list as is a 57/657 in three inch.

Here's my Model 58 ready for duty wearing Pachmayr Decelerator grips. The holster is a NOS Bianchi 99T, duty belt is also from Bianchi, and the double speedloader pouch (partially seen in the photos) is from HKS.

Great looking 58 and rig you have there. Bianchi made a similar holster for autos - can't recall the number, maybe 100? I had one for a Commander and used it for quite a few years, but can't recall what happened to it.

Thanks, amigo!

I believe the semi-auto version of this holster was the #98.

The need it filled or gap it filled was between the 357magnum and the 44magnum. Some shooters wanted a larger more powerful magnum caliber but didn't want a 44magnum.

It was developed for the law enforcement to take the place of there 357magnums. But some didnt like the increase in recoil.

I like all three magnum revolvers, the 357, 41, & 44 magnums.
My very first s&w N frame purchases was the s&w m58 & m57.
When I shot my m58 for the very first time from that day forward my love really kicked in for the 41 magnum. I ccw and shot the 44
Magnus for most of my gun ownership life. I wanted something different but still wanted the magnum power. I still like my 44 magnum and 357 magnum but the 41 magnum does fill that in between gap. Love it or hate it it's got a cult following and I understand why.

We were lucky to have Elmer Keith, Bill Jordan and a few others who supported and pushed the development of the magnum calibers because where would we be without them. Elmer was the godfather of handgun hunting. Thanks to s&w for listening to them and Remington arms for manufacturing the magnum ammo.

Beautiful gun and rig! Thanks for sharing. My personal preference is for the Bianchi tan 5BH.

My favorite shooting M58. Picked her up for about $250 in the 80s - no box, just the M58. Approximate 1971 production. I have shot hundreds of reloads through this pistol.

Default I get the impression...

I get the impression that people that have a .41mag NEED to have a .41 mag and not just for plinking or target. I asked one time who had this 'oddball' caliber and the fans of the .41 set me straight quick. Most of them hunters and woods defenders. And there were LOTS of them. So I got scared and ran away.

I plink with a .41 load - 220 LSWC and 7.0 grains of 231. It is also very accurate.

Great posts and picks everyone....

I had one of the last Ranch Dog Marlin molds they made...I ended up selling it to another Marlin shooter as it would not chamber in any of my handguns... I mainly use the 255 grain LBT bullet from Cast Performance now...

I've had four of the 657 Combat Specials over the years. The one I finally kept was Mag-Na-Ported when I got it. It had the original Combats on it but since this gun is a bit scratched up and Mag-Na-Ported I switched the grips to another pristine 657 CS that I sold to RGS and kept these Combats that came on the other gun that someone put texture on. One day I need to polish it out...

Mountain Gun, 357 NightGuard and the 657 CS...10 yards DA..not a lot of difference...

657 4" and custom 58....

357 PD and Taurus TiTracker DA at 15 yards...don't sell the Taurus guns short...

Keep them pics coming...

Bob

1972 vintage model 58 and a 1976 model 57.
The 57 was bought a few months back with the original box of ammo..minus 6 rounds.
I have yet to shoot it. Both are about 98%.

I really like the Model 357 Night Guard with 8.1 grains of Unique and either Lyman 220 cast swc or Speer 220 grain JSWC.

I love your guns but wanted to comment on your pictures! That post with the lane running off in the distance reminds me of our old home place where I grew up long ago! Beautiful! I have five
41s of my own. It's been one of my favorites over 20 years, now! Mine are a 4" Mod. 58, a 4" Mod. 657, two 6" Mod. 57s and an 8&3/8" Mod. 57. I shoot a 220 gr. RCBS cast bullet in them all. They all have excellent, light triggers and are very accurate. I also like your load of unique, too! Enjoy your guns!

Nice grips on the nickeled M57 (or is it a 657?).

Default My favorite revolver

My favorite revolver is a S&W Model 58 customized by Hamilton Bowen, finished in 2009, and in its original caliber, 41 Magnum. This is one of a set of 5 identical guns, commissioned in various calibers (e.g., 45 Colt, 44 Special, 45 S&W). It has a new old stock S&W Model 57 barrel cut to 4", with the crown and rib machined to look identical to the original factory barrel. The front sight has an improved profile and the barrel/cylinder gap is a tight .004". The barrel's bore is a tight .410" and the chamber throats have been all cut to .411". The gun has a complete action job, times early and consistently and locks up solid at hammer release on each chamber. The front of the cylinder has Bowen's signature "Black Powder" chamfer, and he also installed an internal trigger stop, a carefully fit hardened pin set inside the rebound spring. The sights are regulated to shoot a 215 grain lead SWC mid-range load 1" above point of aim at 25 yards. During the regulation process 1.5" groups were routine (hand held from a bench). The grips are Spegel Extended Boot grips in Makassar Ebony (aka Brazilian Rosewood) custom fit to the gun. They are cut away for a speed loader and fit the grip frame perfectly. To improve its looks I had Bowen redo the case hardened finish on the hammer and trigger. The colors are now vivid and quite striking.

Here is a picture of the 45 S&W built on a Model 520.

Default .41 Magnum - the best ever

Without a doubt the best revolver round ever developed.
Thanks to Elmer Keith and Bill Jordan for their work in bringing the cartridge and guns to fruition. This cartridge is my favorite in a large frame revolver. Pleasant to shoot, very accurate and dare I say more versatile than the esteemed .44 magnum.

This is a great thread in honor of the 50th anniversary of the .41 Magnum.

I currently don't have S&W .41 magnum...so there is no better time to start looking for one.

Ok, I understand I'm about to commit a bit of heresy here, but I'm wondering if a Model 58 could be machined to accept moon-clips and fire either 10mm or .40s&w in a model 58/57? If this is not the proper forum for this query, I apologize in advance.

If you want to do it safely, you need a new barrel and cylinder.

A 10mm is a true .40 caliber, while 41 Magnum is a true .410 caliber. That's why the new barrel is required. As far as I know no one ever made a rimless 41 caliber pistol cartridge with a straight wall case. The closest cartridge I found was the 41 Automag (or 41 JMP) which was a necked down 44 Automag cartridge. If a rimless was not what you were after, but instead moon clips to hold 6 41 Mag cartridges for faster reloading, I'm not aware of anyone making full moon clips to fit the 41 Mag.
