Picked this one up last month. It is my first .41 Mag, and I really like it. I can see a 657 Mountain Gun in my future.

Love the 41 although both of mine are Rutgers. A 57 of some sort is in my future whenever I find one and I have the right amount of money in my pocket.

Picked up a 657 Friday before last. Would’ve posted about it here, but didn’t know about this thread:
Proud new 657 owner
I also bought a nickel 57 no dash the week before Father’s day:
Father's Day came early!😊

There's nothing new about this early 58, I've had it for more than a decade. It came to me with these non-original target grips, and at some point in it's past a target trigger had been installed, and the hammer was thinned down on the sides and blued - hopefully they didn't change the surface hardening of the hammer/sear interface. What were they thinking?! It has a beautiful, and I believe original bluing. I'm not one of the folks who don't like it when former owners change things to their liking, it was their property after all. I've only shot the "police load" cartridges, it shoots very, very well.
There's a thread somewhere on this forum about where all the shooter grade guns are; here's one. I don't like to ship guns, don't have the gumption for gun shows, so here it sits, waiting for my shoulder and elbow to go back in time, or for my son to sell it later for $25.00.

I wanted a Redhawk in 357/41mag ever since they were offered. I settled for a m58 & m57 in nickel. I was happy to find them. With no RedHawks in site. Then a Redhawk in 41 mag popped up for sale. A few weeks later the Redhawk in 357 mag popped up. I figured I’d keep the s&w too. I feel I have the best of both worlds.

One of 4
Someone way back suggested a custom case for this gun. Here it is with a custom case and Kieth Brown grips.

BigBill...I had one of the 5.5" Redhawks many years ago and sold it.... A couple of years ago when Ruger made a run of 4.2" guns I bought one and love it....has an extremely smooth DA. The following year Ruger did a run of 2.75" guns...bought one of those also but the action isn't as nice as the 4"...
The middle picture is the best 50 yard DA group I have ever fired...right at 6". One shot is just off the plate at 7:00 o'clock...
They are fairly hard to find now...Bob

I, too love the .41 Magnum cartridge. I have a 29 and 629 as well but my heart is with the .41. It is the 8 3/8” one in the middle.
My 1978 Model 57 just came back from Ford’s (discussed in a different thread) and with the like-new vintage Bianchi X-15 shoulder holster and 5BHL side holster I was able to acquire a couple of months ago I feel like I was able to transport back into the late 70s and get all this stuff brand-new.
Amazing!

I picked up a Model 57 no dash 8 3/8 in exceptional condition a year ago and a Model 58 this summer that has been carried a lot, but fired little. I bought the 58 from the original owner who picked it up in the late '60s and had fired less than a box of shells through it. I love them both and have been shooting both of them every chance I get. I am a big fan of the .41 mags.

My 41's see a lot of shooting . I cast my own bullets . I use the " Keith " H&G 258 , 220 gr swc or LBT 220gr WFN and occasionally a 240 gr swc . Everything is sized .411 . Had to go to Buffalo Arms to get the sizing die . My favorite load is using WSF , 8.5grs .
I have toyed with the idea of buying a GP-100 and have it converted into a 6 shot 41 special . Starline makes the brass . I bought 500 pcs when it first came out . I haven't decided on the barrel length , a 5" keeps my attention , or maybe a 4" . But then , a 3" would make a neat package and real handy to carry . hmmm

For some reason I have always been a fan of the 41 mag. A couple of years ago I was in a gun shop/pawn store. on a whim I asked if he had any Model 57's. I was very surprised when he pulled out a 6 inch blued. He wanted 700.00 for it. I pulled the cash out on the spot. My 57 was made in 1980, it is a no dash and in beautiful shape. it had a set of Pac's on it and a buddy gave me a very nice set of the correct targets. I enjoy shooting it. I am a sucker for N frames in 41 or 44 mag. I would really like to get the wood presentation box for it.

Pinnacle finished this 3" .41mag M28-2 a few months ago. Mark cut a 4" M58 barrel to 3"and made the front sight and fitted a titanium M357PD cylinder. The gun had already been round butted but had been bubba'd and as in rough shape, Mark went through it, cleaned it up, and finished it in matte blue. It turned out great and it is a terrific gun for field/farm carry.

I've been looking for a 657 in 4" or a mountain gun (either that I can afford) , no luck yet . I'm patient . Spent 10 days , over Christmas and New Years at a little cabin in the country here in Tx , has a little outdoor shooting range next to cabin . I really enjoyed my 6" 41 mag . Shot a 240 gr swc (Accurate Molds , 41-240F) over 20.0grs of 4227 , LPM primers . Really nice load . 10 grs of BE-86 worked well too . Both felt about the same as far as recoil and were accurate and very comfortable to shoot . I cast my own . Regards , Paul

That is a nice looking bullet cowboy...have you shot anything with it yet?
I have several Accurate Molds...he is a great guy to work with and so FAST. I asked for a 250 grain version of the 41-215V and it became the 41-250F and he had it to me in about two weeks.
4" 57/657s are the hardest to come by and usually the most pricey... Depending on the year, condition, accessories they will usually start at $800 and work up to $2k for a nice 1964/5 57 in the PC. A 657 Mountain Gun still brings $1100-1300 and a standard 4" 657 usually about a grand... Well worth spending the money for...my favorite Smiths...

I prefer the 6”/6.5” barrels on revolvers. But the 4” m58 n frame handles awesome in 41 mag. I wanted a revolver in 41 mag for fourty years. I wanted a Redhawk. Couldn’t find one so I purchased the s&w m58 & m 57.
I thought I was done and happy. Then a Redhawk in 41 mag and in 357 mag shows up. Oh well it’s only money.

Superman , No I haven't hunted with that 240 gr bullet . Just been trying out some different loads . It shoots very well with everything I have tried. I just have a 2 cavity mold . Am thinking about getting another in 4 cavity . I like that design that much .
Yes , Tom @ Accurate is a great guy to work with . I have several of his molds . My " most used " 357 cast bulllet is the Ray Thompson design ( 2 crimp grooves ) w/o the gas check I got from Accurate . I have 2/ 4 cavity molds in that design ,I like it that well .

Funny I just got in on the group buy over on the Cast Boolit Forums for the MeHic 358156. I'm getting a 6 cavity aluminum flat base and a 6 cavity brass with HP pins and gas check. It is the bullet I cast back in the 1970s when I had a Model 19...ran well over 10K of them through that gun in the 10 years I had it. I've also shot it from my .38 Super...
BigBill...get one of those 4.2" Redhawks (if you can find one)....it is a NICE gun...

I've only seen two Mod. 57's for sale in local gun shops. One was a 4 inch that, at the time, I simply could not justify but, I did convince the shop owner, a friend of mine, to sell it on this forum and he did.
The second one, while marked Mod. 57, has a back story. The owner was a retired LEO and his widow placed several of his S&W's on consignment with a LGS. I bought his 686-3, 4 inch and looked carefully at the others. They included a 629, 6" and the Mod. 57 but, the tag contained additional information.
This particular Mod. 57 was sent back to the mother ship, fitted with a 6" Mod. 29 barrel and cylinder and returned. I keep meaning to ask if the original barrel and cylinder are available but, I really wonder why some one would go to that trouble when they already owned a .44?
A .41 is on my list and eventually, I'll find one that will have to come home with me.

...was as simple then as it is today...the .41 is the Step-Child and the .44 the Legitimate Heir to the Magnum Throne... And back in the day the .41 was even less popular than it is now...even though it IS the BETTER round..
It is too bad that it more people don't recognize that, but I don't waste my time trying to convinced the unwashed...

I disagree with a couple of points here. Not better(less bullet diameter). Not the step child but, a different caliber all together. Sorry but my $.02. Now, as heir to the throne I'd suggest the .45 Colt(same stopping energy with less pressure than the mighty .44 magnum)?

Thanks! Sorry for taking so long to reply, I just saw your post. Our own 05CarbonDRZ made that holster set for me. He does outstanding work and has made several pieces for me. You can find him and lots of pictures of his work here - American Classic Gunleather - Home | Facebook

Time for another BTT to see if we have any new .41 owners....
Shot two of mine last week...a Freedom Arms 97 with 4.25" barrel and round butt and a 1977 vintage Ruger Blackhawk with the best cleanest breaking trigger of any New Model I have ever shot....

I think it is absolutely incredible when these 4 year old threads continue. Classic!!, and I'm talking about the guns displayed here. It goes to show just how strong the attachment some of us have to the revolvers chambered in 41 Magnum. I let my 8 3/8 and 6 inch (Both nickel) go to a good friend of mine, but I still have my 6" 57 blue and 58 blue, and the 4" nickel 57. Thanks all for sharing your pictures and stories of these guns.

Superman , you mentioned buying a clone mold of the Thompson/Lyman 358156 mold . I bought 2 / 4 cav's from Accurate Molds years ago . It is the mold that gets used the most for the 38spl / 357 mag calibers . I fill the lube groove and the 1st (lowest ) crimp groove with lube as well . My favorite loads in 357 cases are : 7.5 grs of WSF and 9.0grs of HS-6 . With HS-6 I use full magnum primers .
I have started trying my hand at powder coating my cast bullets . Seems easy enough and they seem about as accurate as those w/o . I recently had some real fun with my 41 mag's . I loaded some cast bullets " backwards " base exposed and seated the base about to the case mouth . On top of a light charge of a fast burn powder . I think it was either tite group or Bullseye . I was shooting them at about 20 yards . They were very accurate , very light recoil and I went home with a smile on my face . Just to try something different .
