The .41 is my favorite handgun cartridge.

This is a no dash 657 3" square butt I wish Smith had put into production. I carry this one the most.

Here is a 657-4. This is one of the Lew Horton run of 150. I have the box and docs with this one.

A first year production Model 58. This is my favorite handgun and shoots like a dream.

Model 57 from around 1976

I shoot a lot of .41 Mag, and I cast my own bullets and load my own ammo. Real cheap and real plentiful. These came from a beautiful old H&G mold.

There was the .41 AE, which is an odd little cartridge with its 9mm rim size. Wasn't it a true .41-caliber? I've only seen it a few times. It in no way compares to the 10mm, much less the .41 Magnum, in terms of power, but it is out there - or maybe "was" out there - would be more correct.

In the 1980s I purchased a S&W Model 58 (Blued). The factory 210gr. lead
bullet leaded the bore "Big Time". Tried the factory JSP round and found its recoil "Something Else". Put it on a shelf and forgot it. A few years later I started with a rural county Sheriff Department and remembered the Model 58. I purchased 210gr Silvertips and liked the revolver and the ammo to the point I used it for a service weapon. Later I "Retired" it due to the cost of ammo (I didn't reload) plus difficulty of locating ammo and replaced it with a converted .44mag Model 28 4". #2 Son has the Model 28 now and loves it.

Great looking guns everyone.... I have not been online much as I am in the middle of nowhere Idaho enjoying the outdoors.

The poster who has the 57 no- non-P&R gun...it probably dates to right around 1981 when S&W dropped the P&R features. I have seen "N" prefix no- guns with pinned barrels but non recessed chambers and recessed chambers with a non-pinned barrel...I think yours is the first that I have seen without a -1 and neither...it was probably one of the last 57 no- guns made before the AAA serial number prefix started.

Have been doing quite a bit of long range shooting at my friends cabin and in the outback. There is a solitary sagebrush in the middle of some bare ground on the hill behind the cabin...it lasers at 780 yards. Using the above posted Freedom Arms 654 with the Clements front sight if the front sight if totally elevated in the rear notch it is dead on for 800 yards.

My friend and I have both used 4" S&Ws to shoot at the bush but I have to put the screw that holds down the rear sight in the notch and then balance the bush on top of the front sight...not conducive to great accuracy....

The following gun isn't a "magnum" but is a .41...a USFA .357 Magnum Shooting Master converted to .41 Special by David Clements...

This shooting at some rocks at 400 yards...

Keep those .41s coming....Bob

Great pics everyone, particularly fond of the 58s - I wish someone would do a review of one
of the modern Classic 58s and post some pics of one with the older stocks.

Oh my, that's the stuff. They've always intrigued me but I just couldn't get around
the newer stocks even if I squinted - with the correct ones they're downright good-lookin'.

Thank you for the pic sir.

Out of the box the trigger pull was a bit heavy and the left side of the trigger dragged on the frame. With a 13# trigger rebound spring, a little smoothing and some trigger pivot pin bushings the trigger pull is now nice and smooth 7 lb. 12 oz. DA and crisp 2 lb. 13 oz. SA. Fit and finish on the rest of the gun is excellent, high polish black blue and a barrel to cylinder gap of .005" all the way around.

Now wearing Herrett's Jordan Troopers.

They .41 AE was a .410 caliber cartridge that used a rebetted rim of 9mm size. This allowing the IMI CZ75 copy guns to shoot a .41 cal cartridge out of a 9mm. It came out about the same time that the .40 S&W did which killed it.

TK customs lists a conversion on any Smith N framed .41 cutting the cylinder to except their full moon clip. They are the ones that have the full moon clips for the Smith 442/642 Pro Series.

I've told this story before - but it never gets old to me. About 2 1/2 years ago I was on the lookout for a 41 magnum Mountain Gun. Earlier, I didn't really like the "wispy" barrel on the Mountain Guns, but the more I thought about it, the 41 magnum seemed to be a great caliber for this size revolver. I had searched for one for several months, to no avail. I was at work, talking to a co-worker about my dilemma. He is also a gun enthusiast. I told him that if he ever saw one pop up anywhere, to let me know and I would snag it. He said he would, and as he was walking out the door (literally the door had barely closed) I clicked on the classified ads section of this forum, and suddenly there at the top was a pristine model 657-4 Mountain Gun at a great price from a fellow forum member! I couldn't believe it. It was posted as I was talking to my co-worker. I submitted "I'll take it", and I immediately called my friend (who by this time was just down the hall) and told him the news. He couldn't believe it either. It was listed for no more than 90 seconds, and it was mine. To this day, it is probably my favorite revolver, and I have had many. That was a very lucky day for me, and I'm glad I was paying attention. wyatte

The trip is going well Kevin.... Went up on the hill behind the cabin last night to check the sagebrush we have been shooting at...it is 780 yards... Just as I got to the top a storm rolled in with 40+ mph winds. I had a rain jacket but the pants got soaked and was about 50 yards from the bush when I had to turn back or get blown off... Will try again when the weather is more stable....

This is just short of the top looking back toward the cabin...

..and the stubby rainbow produced by the storm...

Have we run out of .41s???

Shooting the "little" FA 97...this is the hardest gun to shoot accurately. This was 30 yards and have to really concentrate every shot...

Here's a second year that I picked up a while back. My first .41mag.

It was originally advertised as a 1980 Model 657. All it needed was a little love and polishing.

You guys are tearing me up with this thread!

I have a 4" 29-2, a 6.5" 629 Classic, A 6" HP, and a 4" 19-3... See what is missing in my modest little collection???!!

My first experience with a model 57 was very much regrettable and if I could go back in time I would kick my own rear...

At the LGS choosing my first S&W... I was looking at a new 686-6, and a used 629 no dash trying to decide... Shop owner passed me a Smith m57 (that was cheaper than the new 686) and informed me it was a 41 mag... What?? 41 mag?? Never heard of that! What is it?? At the time I was not yet handloading and mostly due to my thought that ammo would be hard to come by, I passed on the 57 and opted for the new 686! STUPID I KNOW!

Now I am obsessed with procuring a 4" m57.... Mostly because of what I have learned from being a member here...

Thanks ALOT guys! :P

Just kidding

Next Smith I get a kitchen pass for will be a 57... till then, I can only dream.....

This is who introduced me to the .41 Magnum, thats my late father with yours truly. I have his M58 and his old duty belt too, wish I had his nightstick to go with it though.

Well a couple of weeks ago I got a 3'x3' piece of OSB, two t-posts and post pounder up to the top of the "hill" behind the cabin I've been staying at...it is 780 yards from the porch to the target....

From the target looking at the cabin...

First time I tried I made two hits out of 30...one with a 255 LBT=WFNGC and a home cast 245 grain RN...

255...

245...

The 245 went through the OSB and hit the right t-post and was found about 3' to the right of the target laying on top of the dirt...

Last weekend my friend who owns the cabin and his daughter came up and we launched more rounds at the target....

I used the same Freedom Arms .41 Magnum with Clements long range front sight and managed to score two hits with the first five shots fired...

The two hits in the horizontal centerline of the target are the two new hits.

..walking up to check the target is no easy task...

...she likes to dig for expended bullets...

..and found the 255 with the gas check...

255 on the right and 245 on the left...

One bullet from my second session landed right in front of the target close enough to throw dirt on it...

Hits on target backer from the rear..

Nothing like fun with a .41!!!!

That puts my "long range" shooting of 100 yards with my Model 58 into real perspective. That's impressive!

Love that black finish... I have a 1964 that is gray parkerized...

Did some more long range shooting with the .41s yesterday...lots of fun. This time I was with a friend north of Boise...

This was the hill we were picking targets off of...we backed off along the opposite rim and got shots from 200 to just short of 600 yards...

FA97...

My friend shooting my Mountain Gun...

I appreciate it. Wish I knew what the finish was for sure. I got it from a gun store in Alaska, so I figure it must be a pretty durable finish.

Yours is mighty nice looking too. I like that gray finish.

Very nice!
I just snagged a 657 3" with factory combat grips yesterday. I have Ahren's boot grips on my 629 snubbie, but need to get a set in cordia for the 657. Also want a set for my 19 2.5.

Back in 1965 I was reading all of the stories of the new .41 Magnum in Guns and Ammo and I decided that I had to have one of them. I even bought a couple of boxes of ammo before I had the gun. I could not afford the model 57 so I was on the lookout for a model 58 or a Ruger Blackhawk. On my way to College that fall I stopped in a gun store in Redding and they happened to have a Ruger Blackhawk .41 magnum with a 4 5/8” barrel. I paid the man the money and returned 3 days later to pick it up. Yes California had a waiting period back then. Its serial number was 87XX. The X’s are because I do not remember the last 2 digits. While deer hunting I found an old partitioned steel box with several thin steel walls in it. I shot it with my .41 and my BIL shot it with his Win model 94 30 30. The .41 penetrated further than the 30 30. Somewhere I have photo of that test box.
I purchased my first model 57 sometime in early 1973. I long ago traded off the Ruger. I am getting a hankering to take out one of my .41’s to the range for a session but unfortunately my Dr. does not want me to even shoot a .22 at this time. I am afraid I will have to wait until next year before I get the green light. That at least gives me plenty of time to load up some ammo.

My first experience with the 41 Magnum came when my brother chose one as his graduation present from high school. We traded back and forth between a Colt 3-5-7 and that Blackhawk, off and on for a few years. Then, when I was discharged from the Army in '72, I found a Model 58 in a pawn shop for $86 bucks. I bought that one and carried it deer hunting for a couple of years. That one also was traded back and forth for a few years.
Flash forward to 1990's. I had been laid off and (now in my
40s) had returned to school to earn a BS in Marine Biology, followed by an MS in Animal Behavior. A buddy asked if I would get my Guide's License and help him with guiding, mostly on wild hogs in Central California (to earn some extra cash). I quickly learned that the 357 was a miserably inadequate hog pistol and most 44 mag bullets won't hold up to the thick gristle plate on a feral boar. So I traded back into that 41 Blackhawk. As stated, my bro ended up with it Now, somehow my brother ended up with both (I vaguely remember a trade involving a pristine New Service).

I traded into a New Model Blackhawk for my wife to carry in bear country:

About 7 years ago, my mom passed and I finally got part of the estate (after fighting with another brother for 5 years). One of my dreams had been to re-build a selection of Old Model Blackhawks. One of them is an OM 41 that, unfortunately, has been converted. It sports sheep horn grips (courtesy of Patrick Grashorn), goes with a Bark River knife and a matching fire stick.

Unfortunately, it was preceded by an OM Blackhawk in 45 Colt and, now, by a Gary Reeder custom SBH in 454 Casull, as my bear gun:

..The Mountain Gun series....who here think that they should have 5" slim barrels instead of 4"...isn't the 5" Model 27 the best balanced N-frame of all...so being the 50th Anniversary of the .41 Magnum it was time for a "slim barrel 5" 57"....

Life started out as a badly rusted and pitted 1973 vintage Model 27...

Sorry for the bad pic of the end of the barrel...the pits were deep...

Bought the gun last fall and before my gunsmith, who trained at S&W, left for Florida for the winter had him spin the barrel off... It then went to Delta Gunsmithing to be rebored to .41. I was tempted to have them rebore the cylinder to .41 Special as I already have a USFA SAA in .41 Special but since I had an extra Model 58 cylinder I just decided to have the smith trim the barrel back and keep it a Magnum...

When the smith came back in the spring I left the gun with him before taking off on a three month western vacation... Just got back last week and picked the gun up today...

More than enough meat for a .41 hole...

Some of the deeper pits at the end of the barrel were just too deep to polish out but as this is a shooter I don't really care...

So this guns will join the other 5" 57 that this same smith saved from a badly rusted 6" first year 1964 gun.

Only had time to fire six test shots...more shooting this weekend...

I think we could manage something like that.

It will have to be either Monday or the weekend. I'm tied up Tues-Fri with other commitments.

....soon as I can find a supply of 5" 27s....

I'm wearing this one now in a Dillon/Mitch Rosen 5" holster I bought several years ago when I had a friends 629 Classic for a while. Kept the holster for the 57 5" and now comes in handy for this one...

Better late to the party than not making it at all. Here's my 657 3" with Ahrend's Retro Combats in Cordia. Couldn't make up my mind as to whether I wanted dark wood or light - I got both in one set of grips.

Dr.Lou, I knew those Ahrends would look good on a 657, had 'em on my watch list and was going to grab 'em if they lasted the night.

I see we both have good taste, or at least similar taste. Yeah, I was watching a couple and couldn't make up my mind, and then I saw these - was actually looking for K frame retro combats, but I thought these would look good on this M57thread. I'll let you beat me out of the next pair. lol
