Long story short, got into the shooting sports as a kid in the 90s, and have always loved revolvers (especially the smiths).

Took a liking to the idea of the .41, but wanted ‘my’ first handgun to be a .44. That’s it’s own story.

The first time I ever walked into a local shop near where I worked, I noticed a long barreled nickel plated smith in a presentation box. This was maybe 2-3 years ago.

It was a 57.

It called out to me, but I never took the plunge.

And it sat there, with no takers...till now.

N618xxx.

Has some marks, etc but overall it’s in good condition. Unfortunately the front sight looks a bit damaged as the rear of it is lifted. Hopefully it’ll be a small fix; can’t wait to clear dros, pick it up and get it to the range once the world opens up a bit.
Congratulations on the new additions and sorry that you have to deal with DROS

I have a great fondness for the 41 magnum

While I do own several of the 8 3/8" versions (2 each) in blue and stainless, it seems that the shorter barrels are what usually gets shot. The deals were so good on all of these long tubes that I just could not walk away

I found the stainless 657 with the scope mounted, in a Bianchi shoulder holster with some Factory ammo at a gunshow back in 1995. I had just negotiated a price with the seller when the fellow with the adjoining table started telling him he was selling it too cheap. He starched listing the value of this and that to make his point. So I just told the fellow outright if he was making an offer on the package bigger than mine, to go ahead and buy it and I started walking away from the table

As you can see, it came home with me . . . though I do love the finish on the 57s better than the 657s

Beautiful gun Ray...

Have had a couple of the 8 3/8" nickel guns....one was a set of consecutive serial numbered guns... The other was a LNIB never fired...

...and welcome to The Cult....

Lots of good posts and links here for .41 Lovers...

Thanks all!

Ironically, just like my first .44 mag ended up not being a smith (Anaconda), my first...and second .41s weren’t either:

Nice looking 41 Mag. Great find in CA as you don't see them very often for sale here.

IMHO, S&W model 57s have developed somewhat of a Cult following recently, I'd leave the original grips on it if it were me? Of course it's not mine it's yours so do as you see fit.

I think that the opposite is true.

The 41 Magnum is much less of a Cult revolver today than it was say in the 1990s

I put Culina's on my most recent Model 57 because what the factory put on was very plain looking target stocks and this revolver deserves better than plain

I know that there are people among us that don't want to touch whatever the factory did no matter how it looks today . . . But changing grips on a firearm is one of the easiest things that we all do to add that personal touch.

Sometimes it is for beauty and sometimes it is for functionality and on occasion, if we are lucky enough, it is for both

Thanks all

I’ll keep the grips stored away for presentation purposes, but wanted something that I would worry ’less’ about damaging due to use (then again I don’t want to ding the culina grips either).

Now for some .41 mag dies...

I found a very nice and tight 6" M57, with an S prefix, early this past Summer, and it has become my favorite handgun. It had some sort of vent rib add-on, I'm afraid to try taking it off because I don't want to mess anything up; over time, I've come to sort of like it. I got no box or factory stocks when I bought it, it had a set of nice black Altamont stocks, but they were too dark for my liking, so I got a set of slightly thinner Rosewood Altamont stocks.

I reload, so finding ammo is no issue, Starline makes really good brass for them, but I do wish there was a greater selection of bullet weights. I'd like to find something around 180 grains for range use and maybe a SD load.

Shooting it is fun, always gets attention from others at the range, even the rifle range about 50 yards away. Some of those guys come down to see what the cannon fire is all about.

Thanks, it does make it a bit unique. I thought the same thing when I saw it, somebody wanted it to look either like a Python, or a Dan Wesson.

H-T..Welcome to the world of .41s...

That is a Pachmayer rib... If I recall correctly they were glued on. I think it looks great also...

As to looking for a 180 grain bullet for SD...if you want a jacketed, Sierra makes a 170 grain and if you can find them Remington has a 200. Barnes has a solid copper HP that is 180 grains I think. Several companies use them in their loads. I was just shooting some Federal from a 4" Taurus Tracker a couple of days ago. I believe the velocity was in the mid-1200s. Kick is mild compared to a 210.

GT Bullets made a 175 cast HP...I use it in several of my guns...

41 Caliber : GT Bullets!, Fine Hand Cast Lead Bullets

For a target load 8.0 grains of Unique is your friend...just stick any bullet on to of it for a very very accurate load...

Since 1980 I have been carrying my 41 Magnums with the 170 grain Remington SJHP on-top of 25.5 grains of H110

The only image of the 170 SJHP that I have out there is a comparison with my 385 grain 500s. Sorry that it looks so small

This load makes a most satisfying display when shot from my snubbies

Deep, throaty with a beautiful orange fireball

1284 FPS from the 3" 657
1418 FPS from the 6" 657
1568 FPS from the 8 3/8" 57
1708 FPS from the 10" DE
2078 FPS from the 20" 1892

The downside is Remington stopped making these projectiles more than a decade ago. I have less than one carton left

Now with Remington Bankrupt and split apart by the Courts I do not see much hope for the 170 SJHP to ever return

colt_saa...that is a GREAT bullet. I found a box at a gun show is 2010 and never even knew Remington made them. The velocity from the 170s were 1349 from a 4" 57...

Too bad they don't make the ammo or the bullet any more...

Bob,

I would bet that an enterprising fellow could find the copper jackets and make some as a 'home brew' type of proposition...anyone here ever make their own JSP or SJHP?

There has to be more owners of the 41 magnum than we think. Decades plus ago when the new 41 mag ammo showed up the salesman in my LGS said he hasn’t seen new 41 mag ammo in two years. Who’s buying up all the 41 mag ammo? Stupid question on my part the 41 mag owners are buying it, there are more 41 mag revolver owners than we think.

Thanks for all the fine pictures. My left side of my brain says I need another 41 mag revolver, my right side of my brain says maybe you do, I’m going to be in trouble with the misses time to put heat in the dog house......

I bought new .41 Mag ammo from LAX back in July 2019.
It was very reasonable at the time.
I should have bought twice as much.

..maybe...

Federal was actually making five different loads at one time...last time I checked I think they are down to three. They dropped the 210 Fusion and 250 Cast Core. CCI was making that great 200 grain JSWC-HP in the aluminum cased Blaser line but dropped it... Speer has the Gold Dot HP...

Since Remington is now owned by the same conglomerate...well I would not hold my breath.

Biggest problem is NO ONE IS MAKING ANY .41s...

Except for special runs Ruger only has the 4 5/8" and 6.5" Blackhawks, S&W the 6" 57 Classic and the Freedom Arms 97 and 83...that is it. If Ruger made the .41 Redhawk a standard caliber, S&W made a 69 and a 4" 657, Taurus would bring back the caliber in some of their guns and a COLT PYTHON there would be more ammo made...

till then...dead in the water....

So out of curiosity I went back and checked what I paid for that new LAX ammo.

Naturally they are out of stock today but the price tag for the same 250 rounds is $450.

June 16, 2019 I paid $131.77 for the same 250 rounds.

On the same day I paid $105 for 500 new .41 Mag casings from Starline Brass.

Today I'm sitting in pretty good shape.

That’s an interesting thought. A Model 69 in .41 Magnum would make a pretty darned nice trail gun. I wish we could expect to see one some day.

Last yr my LGS had 5 new boxes (250 plated bullets / box ) of Berry's 210 gr 41 magnum bullets . Some guy had quit reloading and dropped off these boxes . The store owner said , " $20 / box " . I took all 5 . I'm not usually a plated bullet shooter , but @ 8cts / bullet . That was just too cheap to pass up . Regards Paul

Delete trail gun and add all purpose.
Unfortunately “would be nice” and actual production have far too many lawyers and bean counters on the way to the production floor.

Taurus made exactly that gun. It was introduced more than 20 years ago.

They were available in various construction materials. The top one in the above image is Total Titanium and weighs in at 19 ounces. The bottom one in the above image is stainless steel and weighs in at 29 ounces

They are about L-frame in size.

The Model 415T has a Titanium frame, Titanium cylinder and a Titanium barrel shroud. The barrel is stainless

Yes it would be nice if they were Smith & Wessons, bu I have been very pleased with them

That is a 3" 657 from the eighties. The grips are white Corian. I have a few different sets of Corian grips

I go back and forth on that revolver with a set of wood combats

I can not recall there ever being a 3" Nickel Model 57

What’s discontinued in 41 mag revolvers?

The s&w m57/6” in blue still available.

The m57/4”, m58/4”, m57/8 3/8” are discontinued?

...you got it..everything blue, nickel or stainless except for a 57 6" blue...

In 2014 they didn't even bother doing a commemorative like they have done for others... Kinda like your Mother forgetting your birthday...

Those Taurus Trackers are great... Have a 4" and 6" in titanium and stainless 4"...have been wearing the Ti 4" all day..26 oz loaded...hardly know it's there.

Love those grips colt_saa...

About the only bullet I use in my Smiths thesse days...8.0 grains of Unique gives 950 fps and great accuracy...

This was at 50' DA with a 657 Mountain Gun back about 2004. The taget was a B21PC that had no aiming point...the low shot was the first round and the aiming point for the rest...

.41magnum, when 10mm just won't do!
I may have to seek one of these out just because I don't have one.

good evening @ll
first of all: sorry for my englisch I am from Austria (Glock country)
I got my hands on a 1980 Model 57 (serial number N674xxx) but this gun seems to be a mix of the Model 57 (frame) and the Model 58 (barrel). Was this option available? I am not a S&W specialist. The pin looks untouched as the gun looks in mint condition as well. The problem is that this combination is shooting high, no surprise because of the very short front sight. The combination looks good (I like it) but the question is: Is this gun a piece of **** or just a rare (stupid?) custom combination.
I attache a picture of my Model 66 how the barrel should looks like.

Yeah, that does look weird. As my Gramps often used to say about things that appeared 'off': 'Sumpin' ain't right!'

Good luck down there in Australia!
