Default Picked up a 66-1

Howdy,
Picked up a real nice 66-1 in a trade. I've been looking for one for some time. I traded a similar one in my early 20s and have regretted doing so. I'm only going to shoot 38s in this one, I have a GP and Security Six for the heavier ammo.

Last Round;

Great find on a great six-gun! Our Department issued the Model 66-1 in 1974-75 time frame. The Combat Magnum of S&W was another S&W Heavyweight Champion in .357's. Man, did you strike it rich! Thanks for showing.

Thanks everyone!
The grips are real comfortable. I'm hoping to take it out today and see how it shoots.

Wow, I just picked up the twin to that gun. 66-1 with the same grips! Nice score man! What did you spend if you don't mind me asking?

It was a straight up trade for a New Model Vaquero 357. I liked the Vaquero, but never warmed up the the grip design. It would always dig into my palm no matter how I held it. Maybe just me, but I find the grip on this 66 much more comfortable.

very nice score there!! I have owned a bunch of Ruger SA revolvers. the only ones that I found comfortable were the ones with the Bisley grip frame. then one day i took notice of how much easier it was to load and unload a double action revolver, and have not looked back since.

Great score! I regard the Model 66-1 as the best variant of the best all around K-frame that S&W ever built. Add to that the factory smooth combats which are the most comfortable grips in my hand ever, and you have the best package going. You did quite well, IMHO!

Nice revolver! Much nicer than my retired PD -1! I think you did great on the trade too.

Yes, the trade worked out for both of us. He got what he wanted and vice versa. Happy on both ends is always a good thing.

The gun has an excellent balance and weight. Similar to that of my Security Six. Someone must have done a trigger job on the single action. Not sure the pound, but very light.

Color me jealous! And let me add that's an incredible trade!! Slowly building up my "next purchase fund" and it'll be for a nice 4" 66-1.

Anybody know why this model has the blued rear sight? The one I had in my early 20s had the stainless rear sight.

Early Model 66's had all stainless sights. The 66-1's and up had stainless front sights with red inserts and blued adjustable rear sights.

I still have the S&W catalog that I first saw a picture of a 66-1... just before I purchased one... and it describes the rear-sight as "blackened stainless".

Actually the change in the sights occurred before the dash 1 models. I've seen two of them. I also thought all the no dash had the earlier style sights. Learn something new every day!

It was a great swap and I'm happy you're enjoying her. The Vaquero is a beauty and I'm looking forward to getting it out to the range. I let her go because I still have my 19-4 with the same grips to enjoy. Thanks again for a great deal!!!!!

Love the 66 in here.

I want a 66, and a 686, either a 3" or 4" for either, but I think I am done for a little while on m,y acquisitions.

The 66 is such a sweet Revolver though.

I would love a 3" 66 or 3" 686+ (Seven Shot) for a Trail-type gun and CCW.

The 3" 66s are very,very pricey though.

So if I get one, I'll probably get a 4" like what you have.

Yes!!!!
Never met the guy and we traded across 2200 miles. I was nervous, but glad I went through with it.

That is the same thing I did waiting for mine. I would love to see some pics of your new 66!

I went hiking after work yesterday and today, and I reached for my Security Six both times. My 66-1 is so pretty I didn't want to get her roughed up. Sometimes I will take her out of the safe just so I can look at her.

l love those grips. You did well.

I just picked up my 4" 66-1 from mc5aw (++++1A) and am loving it.

As to the stainless sights.... what I heard is that shooters reported difficulty using them due to glare. Add to that SS was more difficult to mill, especially smaller parts.

The underside of the sight will have an "S" stamped into it.

I bought one of the originals about 1974 or so. That all matte SS rear was a bear to use in bright sunlight!

Great looking 66! I too think that the grips look cool. I have never found a combat grip that felt right to me. Never held 1 with that style grips. All of my Smith revolvers wear target grips. Enjoy that beauty 66! Bob

Just the normal stainless finish.

Thanks, I'm really happy to have it in my collection. Really fond of the k-frame size for handling and packing. IMO the best size in 357.

Still have my 4" Duty 66-1, early Hogue monogrips (non-rubber). They do move slightly in your hand but due to the shape, I always found it more firmly in my grip than the initial draw. I find the rubber variant too sticky. And my Comp I speed loaders.
The height of the duty revolvers!
